As a compromise, I'm happy to put these in a museum. In the basement, behind some cleaning supplies.

Once every few years you can bring them up front to remind people of a dark time when some people thought owning black people as slaves was a civil right that was worth going to war over.

Fine want a memorial to the civil war dead?  Go for it. Make it a somber affair, as it should be.  But for sure, remove the glorification of those traitorous asshats.

They certainly weren't fighting for a state's right to harbor run-away slaves. Or to be a free state - their constitution specifically forbade that.

Or refuse to comply with the Fugitive Slave Act. And they certainly didn't try to jump borders and illegally vote in another state's election over the choice to be a free or slave state.

Good. It's about time. Virginia may have a governor with a blackface skeleton in his closet but at least the state is finally moving in the right direction.

Now if only we could get rid of the official state song "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny." Geez, that's beyond embarrassing in this day and age.

b0rg9: Replace them all with statues of dickbutt.

I think they all should be replaced with a bronze plaque containing the particular states declarations of succession next to another plaque that accurately explains how long it took that particular state to accept the emancipation of slaves, abandon Jim Crow laws and segregation laws. It can end with a comment about Lincoln's remarkable ability to forgive the succession of the southern states that caused so much lose of life and re-establish the united states. Maybe even educate a few of the locals about what "We fought for states rights" really meant.

Somebody already answered your question, but I wanted to add: turns out, not everything we do is motivated by partisan politics, and more often than not, when you ask "wHaT iF tHEy WeRe a DeMoCrAt," you're just projecting your own partisan hackiness.

"I do not believe this will end well," said Republican Del. Charles Poindexter, who added that the bill sent a "tough message" to every veteran or dead veteran's family.

It should send two tough messages:

(1) Your Confederate ancestor was a racist, traitorous, anti-American dumbfark loser who does not deserve to be honored. He fought for an evil cause.

(2) You are not your ancestor, your ancestor's accomplishments (good or bad) are not your own, and literally nobody should give two wet shiats about what your great-great grandpappy did or didn't do at some arbitrary point in the past.

Now suck it up, Poindexter, and get ready to see your little participation trophies melted down for scrap and hopefully made into something that'll piss you off like windmills or black history month commemorative coins.

Don't be so sure. I have met more than a couple "Clayton Bigsby's" in my day. Racist person I have ever met was a Puerto Rican that was raised in Ocala Florida. He hated hispanics from anywhere, his views on black folks was very KKK.

Nah, they'll just put statues of Trump to replace any Confederate general.

Has the exact same effect of stigginit with "less" controversy - Trump will always be the 45th president regardless of what happens next and it's much harder to remove statues of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson despite them being slaveholders. Lee and Jackson at the end of the day were traitors.
