I think Don Don will cave actually. He's weak. Since this is all being orchestrated by Putin, Agent Orange will do as told and suck it up. Oh he'll have the denizens of Derptown believing he's the tough guy but that won't be the case.

/ He's caved before.

Oh yeah, he's certainly weakness incarnate.  He'll make the list.. but he won't do anything.

Off the top of my head I can't remember how he referred to Obama. But I'm sure it was 100% polite and respectful

If you look at the recent developments between the Philippines and China, it seems more like Xi, is Duterte's Putin.

Duterte has also barred Cabinet officials from traveling to the U.S. and turned down an invitation by Trump to join a special meeting the U.S. leader will host for leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in March in Las Vegas.

I've literally never heard of any Asians turning down an opportunity to gamble.

No way. Trump has a huge crush on authoritarian leaders. This'll be no worse than you telling your girlfriend that that dress does make her look fat. He'll feel betrayed, but will then try and make it up to Duterte. Maybe some flowers, a nice homecooked meal, or offering to implement drug related executions in the US or something.

He's been wooed by China and Russia and it's working well because the Trump admin has gutted the State Department. Also Pompeo is huge tool but I don't think I need to explain that to anyone Fark Pol.

Unfortunately, we're seeing a lot of articles about "X year-old history of cooperation", paired with "Agreement ending." This administration has been a diplomatic cluster fark of epic proportions.

Rude?

FTFA:

Duterte threatened to terminate the security agreement after Washington reportedly canceled the U.S. visa of a loyal ally, Sen. Ronald dela Rosa, who was linked to human rights violations when he first enforced the president's deadly anti-drug crackdown as the national police chief in 2016.

Thousands of mostly poor suspects have been killed under the bloody campaign Duterte launched when he took office in mid-2016, alarming the U.S. and other Western governments and human rights watchdogs.

Remind me, are the Philippines close to the South China Sea?  And isn't that the place China has been routinely ignoring international maritime law, exclusive economic zones of neighboring countries, and militarily building up artificial islands on any landmass they can grab?

I'd say have fun being a de facto vassal state of China, but knowing Duterte's track record on human rights, I wouldn't be surprised if he is selling his criminals to China's fishing fleets.

The Philippines is in a tight spot.  Like other US allies in the region, they realize that American loyalty is pretty fickle especially with Trump.   The Americans just don't seem too keen on sticking around and in the end, Asia is China's territory.  Can't get rid of China.   And frankly had the Americans really given a damn about the correct claims in the Spratleys they would have helped out the Philippines back in the 1990's when the Chinese started showing active interest in the area.  Doing flyovers in the last 10 years is sort of too little, too late.

Filipinos do have a soft spot for the Americans due to historical links, etc.  But the Chinese have been around even before the Spanish showed up (Manila already was a small town with Chinese traders/settlers when the Spanish arrived).

Was in Manila last year and Mainland Chinese investment ramp up in Manila has been rapid. Also lot of immigration from Mainland as well.  My parent's country is just becoming another colony in the Chinese empire.  And so it goes.

An autocratic dictator? Expect trump to be blowing this guy soon. He can't help but suck these types off any chance he gets. Metaphorically of course. He needs to smooth this over so he has more time to blackball and insult and punish Americans.

2020-02-11 9:50:33 AM
Trump immediately convened his Cabinet to come up with the most effective insulting nickname for Duterte.

Alphax: Oh, Donnie will see that as a betrayal..  Duterte will go on the Retaliation List.

and Duterte will make a wanking motion and give exactly zero farks.  He knows what the world knows, Trump is a blowhard but a coward, and he cannot stand the idea that somebody doesn't like him.  So all you have to do is make it clear you don;t and he will do or say ANYTHING to ingratiate himself with you    Duterte is basically practicing diplomacy by "negging",.  And if you read between the lines of the announcement, it's pretty clear China will have a permanent base there in less than 5 years

As I said above... The man IS a monster. They've been murdering people in the "anti-drug crackdown". There's no need to have evidence, either. It's "You WILL find people to look at for drugs" and then those people get killed. Duterte is probably salty, because Trump praised the murders... until he didn't.

But, hey, Trump is your guy, and can do no wrong, right? Right?

South Korea likes us though, that'd be the difference i would be more concerned with Incirlik in Turkey, as it has families and a nuclear arsenal...    and Putin has been working Erdogan for a bit, even offering anti aircraft systems...

Trump wants South Korea to pay for our soldiers like Saudi said they would...

We haven't had a base in the Philippines since the 1990's - Subic and Clark.

I guess we have the age-old discussion of the nature of humanity playing out. In High School, it was comparing / contrasting Lord of the Flies and Les Miserables. Now, it's Republicans vs. Democrats. With 1984 tossed in, for good measure.

One mans "history of cooperation" is another man's legacy of colonialism.

I'm not saying everyone in the Philippines feel that way, but there are definitely people that do.

Trump is that guy, that type of businessman. Who thinks everything, including babes in arms, pets, diplomacy and war should pay him a profit.

When armies pay you a profit, they are pirates and brigands. Trump is the Prince of Thieves and Melania is the Robber Princess. Or possibly Belle.
