Except that homeopathy is putting a drop of honey into a swimming pool then selling 1.5 oz dropper bottles from the pool for $50 each.

I think we've known for a long time that cough drops are more about distracting your kid, to take their mind off the fact that their throat hurts.  Syrup, I would assume just puts them to sleep, to give the parent a break.

They took out the codeine, of course it's not as effective. And my dumb ass college friend is exactly why they took the codeine out. He was tripping balls, missed the last bus out of Oakland, and had to sleep in the gutter until the Greyhound station opened the next morning.

Honey does actually soothe the throat. Alcohol and codeine will soothe the throat even better.

The important thing to remember is that soothing the throat does not make something "medecine."

Spoonful of honey is what I've been using for sore throats ever since I first tried it. It works fantastic. Multi-symptom medicines are nice if you need relief from all the other stuff as well, put for throat pain honey is the best. Instant relief.

As others above have stated: BULLSHIAT.

Honey does nothing to stop a cough for longer than the few seconds it takes to swallow it.

You know what they call Alternative Medicine that works in double blind tests?

Medicine.

There are excellent, effective cough suppressants out there.  If your cough is that bad, go get one.

Did you read tfa? Studies have been done. And only one was partially funded by a honey producers association.

And as tfa also noted: if your cough medicine is that bad, it might be because a lot of the over the counter stuff doesn't work well with kids.

And also adding in some nightshade, not diluting it enough, and killing at least 10 kids

That's the way to go. The 'tussin AND the honey.  Chase with a spoonful of honey&lemon juice.  Then rub chest or upper lip with Vick's.

The body will be too confused to do any coughing...or anything except just passing out.

Vicks on the chest? No, you should rub the Vicks on to your feet before going to bed.

Sovereign remedy for chesty coughs.

We had a fantastic pediatrician. He basically said "look at the ingredients in kid's cough syrups. There's nothing in there that actually helps stop a cough. Some honey will coat the throat and do the same thing as expensive cough medicine."

I would not put this guy in the anti-western medicine camp at all. He was solidly in the do what works, don't do what doesn't work camp.

He moved to Hawaii, the big island somewhere. If you're there and have kids look up Dr. Treece.

A show of overwhelming force is what I do for a cough. I try and get some codeine too if I can.

The problem is this: dry coughs create more dry coughs. Coughing is one of those things that quickly exacerbates itself and lingers for weeks.

The only thing I've found to work is soak that trachea in soothing anything and dose up the patient to the gills. Cut it off before it gets really bad.

Actually, seriously, hot honey & lemon when kids are a bit older. Lemon loosens the mucus and honey soothes. Sleep follows.

I second the honey and lemon. Also put both in hot tea and drink it.

That's why I take cough medicine AND a nice glass or three of hot honey and lemon tea. The tea soothes my throat temporarily until the dihydrocodeine/promethazine mixture does its stuff to get me high enough not to care I feel sick.

They cited a second study, which includes the caveat "This work was supported by an unrestricted research grant from the National Honey Board, an industry-funded agency of the US Department of Agriculture." Sounds more like marketing than science.

Antibacterial Properties of Honey

Though the study points out a lack of studies supporting the 'systemic use of honey as an antibacterial agent' - there is data supporting the effect of honey as antibiotic due to ph and sugar content in specific instances.
