It used to be Lee-Jackson-King Day and all celebrated on Martin Luther King's birthday.
Boy, was that awkward.

In 2000, Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore proposed splitting Lee-Jackson-King Day into two separate holidays after debate arose over whether the nature of the holiday which simultaneously celebrated the lives of two Confederate generals who fought to defend slavery and a civil rights icon was incongruous

You think?????

Election Day was a state holiday in Virginia until 1989 when the Virginia General Assembly had it removed.

I wonder which party controlled the General Assembly when that change was made.

/Election Day should be a Federal holiday.

That was the only way to get VA to declare MLK day at all, it was a compromise that at least got the holiday started in VA.

Why? So people have one less day to do banking and other projects?

The only thing that will help the shift workers who need time to vote is to open up early voting so that shift workers can find time to go on their day off, because a federal holiday will only apply to government and bank workers, do they really need another day off?

some parts of history deserve to be erased.

burn it down, bury the ashes, salt the ground, turn, walk away, and never look back.

"those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it" ?
if you're evil enough to need constant reminders and lessons to not repeat that then you're already a lost cause.  you're probably one of those 'good, god fearing people' who would become a serial killer if you missed 3 church services in a row.

Fortunately they would need to take off their shoes and socks to get to three.

So the day they chose to honor Confederate soldiers rather than recognize the otherwise nationally known day celebrating Martin Luther King Jr....is replaced by a day still not recognizing Martin Luther King Jr?

Not exactly progress I can cheer for

Election Weekend, polling stations open 24/7 starting Friday midnight, closing Sunday midnight. Five year federal prison time for every employer not giving time off.

No exit polling allowed. No early or partial vote totals allowed.

Counting starts Sunday, 12:01 AT the polling stations with paid, unaffiliated witnesses along with live broadcasting showing each ballot counted, along with double redundant backup recordings.

ALL PAPER BALLOTS, kept until the results of the next voting cycle results are certified.

In Thanksgiving we celebrate being thankful for what we've got and then we trample each other for new stuff at the mall. Muricans are quite adept at holding incongruent holidays.

I was thinking a full week. Throw in automatic voter registration while we're at it. Hell, as long as we're dreaming, why not proportional representation in the house and a single transferable vote system for president and senate.

I'd also like a pony.

Maynotlast: BUT WHAT ABOUT OUR HERITAGE... OUR RACIST, TREASONOUS HERITAGE!!!!!!????

I've always thought that this was a horrible argument. This country was founded by treasonous racists. Lincoln himself made it very clear that just because he thought slavery was immoral that he was very much  a white supramacist.

Most people back then were amazingly ignorant and anyone who wants to idolize any 19th century worldview should just be dismissed out of hand as a backwards moron.

While it's certainly true that President Lincoln was a racist and avowed white supremacist, he also grew while in office as much or more than anyone else who has yet held it, to the point that -- by the time he was assassinated -- I strongly suspect that he would have repudiated most of his earlier, ignorant views on race. I believe he was quoted as saying that Frederick Douglass's opinion of his second inaugural address was the one he valued above all others.

Being a man of his time doesn't excuse him for the horrible things he did and said, but at least he tried to rise above that, too.

I think MLK would be more honored by the poor and those targeted by republican disenfranchisement voting against their oppressors than a random day off, so you missed the point.

You May want to check things again. A lot of banks around here are open on Sundays. Realistically,  there is no reason for banks to not be open 7 days a week, unless they don't like providing their customers great service.

Good.  fark the traitors.  Southern states should be ashamed of what those slavery supporting assholes did.

They claim to love US troops yet they celebrate men that killed US troops*.  The hypocrisy is staggering.

*Confederate soldiers were not American soldiers.  Once they took up arms against the US they became traitors.

When they first had MLK day it was combined with Lee-Jackson Day, so it became Lee-Jackson King Day in the late 80's it stayed that way until the early aughts when they separated the two days and made them each holidays on different days.

This bill doesn't get rid of MLK Day it just gets rid of the Lee-Jackson holiday that was separated.

Every time someone in Arlington, VA would mention renaming anything Lee touched the trolls would come out a-crying about Woodrow Wilson and they better rename all his shiat too!

Anyway, Virginia has early absentee voting ( going on right now for the Primary ) via mail and in person, on weekends as well.  I'm all for a Federal paid day off for voting but if we can't get that expanding the days and locations is just as good.
