I'm picturing a bunch of clueless political hacks designing an app.

It's not pretty.

They did. This is just the usual shiat-stirring by a particularly virulent group of Bernie supporters.

How do we know this is the case, and not just the media tooting its own horn?

About 15 years ago I was planning a family trip to England and Ireland and was checking into taking a ferry from Liverpool to Dublin. The website for reservations was a disaster. I finally thought I bought some tickets but it froze up near the end and I couldn't get a confirmation, didn't want to double book so I just called overseas to check. They told me they had no way be sure if I bought tickets or not.

Being upset and very irritated at an extremely bad web site I asked something like "And who the hell designed your website, the boss's mother-in-law's nephew?"   There was a silence. "How did you know?"

Fair odds he was yanking my chain in response for me yanking his, but then again ....

If they did it well, it's a nice mechanism of distributed data entry. There are 1765 precincts to report. That's more than 176 tens. But seriously, people do want to get the results quickly. It affects how they campaign in NH which affects the results in NH. It's a butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon. And we want a damned Hurricane.

I'm seeing it spread on Twitter by Bernie supporters. I suppose it could be a little of both, however.

So just to cover a few things and get this out of the way, because short of buying into conspiracy theories, the following items look suspicious as all hell:

The Iowa dems decided to use a software made by a company called "Shadow" that was, per the article, either created or funded by an organization named "ACRONYM", which itself is made up of former Clinton and Obama campaign staffers. It also appears to be run by Tara McGowan, who by her own tweets, appears to be a Pete superfan

And married to a staffer on Pete's campaign: Michael Halle

And while it appears 3 campaigns have put in money to Shadow for various campaign services, Pete's campaign appears to have put in the most from what's known from the FEC filings

By most reports, it appears this was the first time the app saw a major "test", as they appeared to have tried "Security through obscurity" by just not telling anyone about it until the final leadup to the caucus. With all this going on, there appears to be an uncharacteristic rush to just ignore Iowa altogether and move on as quickly as possible with no or questionable results, while Pete's campaign declared victory despite the lack of official results

Anything I missed?

An app created by a tech firm run by veterans of Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign is taking heat for the unprecedented delay in reporting Democratic caucus results from Iowa.

Instead, results from Monday's caucuses could not be transmitted to Iowa party headquarters and the delays increased. Results are not expected until later Tuesday.

A day is "unprecedented"? How long did it take before electronic communication to carry this shiat by horse all over the state? I bet it was close enough to a day that this isn't actually "unprecedented".

It looks to me like the corporate Dems took a lesson from the Republicans. If you can't win fair and square, cheat.

The optics on this look bad.

2020-02-04 10:53:23 AM
The app is simply a way for precinct workers to report results.  They can also be called in, so if the app is problematic, it can be ditched. Also, every precinct has a paper trail.

Bottom line - All this talk about the app is kind of pointless.  Problems with the app could delay results because they have to fall back to something else, but it would not affect the integrity of the results.

So, staffers from the previous Democratic nominees for president.

What other campaigns should they have been working on?

If they just set their entire paper trails on fire in lieu of an "app", I might understand the conspiracy theories.

Maybe we should stop letting Iowa and their stupid system go first. Caucuses are dumb. Hold a primary with voting all day so people can actually, you know, vote. Instead we have a stupid social experiment deciding the first winners in an election cycle. And to top it off, Iowa has farked things up the last few goes.

The software broke, but let's not forget where the core of the problem lies.

These are people who think Mike Bloomberg entering the race is some sort of super-convoluted plan by the DNC to hurt Bernie's (er, excuse me "the progressive's") chances. They aren't exactly dealing in reality

I see two possible scenarios as likely.

1) developers where crappy
2) Russians sowing confusion.

Normally I would go with 1.  But in this day and age 2 is equally possible.

raerae1980: Why should I care so much about this APP?  I thought they used paper ballots?

They then used the app to report the tallies from each polling place to be able to beat the evening news deadline, because paper ballots take too long to count.

The clusterfark is mostly media-driven.

It's starting to look more and more like the right-wing trolls attempting to sow conspiracy and division are back out selling, and that there are lots of willing buyers.

The app sucked.  They now have to do things the old fashioned way.  So what?

In 2016 the Republicans had to go back and change the results of the Iowa caucus weeks later (Mittens announced winner, corrected to Santorum).  Nobody pitched a fit then.
