But what are parents supposed to blame when their "past the sell-by date" nethers produce a kid with problems?

Something I've noticed: people that think vaccines cause autism do not seem to know what autism is. It's astonishing; I've encountered so many yoga moms on Twitter that seem to think autism is mental retardation, or worse. Regardless, it's sickening, the constant inference that that couldn't live with a child that has any problems.

I, myself, am on the spectrum... Granted, I'm very, very high functioning... But it's always upsetting when I encounter a Twitter bot that thinks I should be a vegetable.

The chart was misleading. The correct comparison would be between rate of vaccine complications and (rate of disease complications) x (probability of contracting disease).

I have no idea how low those odds are, but they're low, at least in a society in which vaccination is commonplace.

Declining to vaccinate is less stupid and more selfish. In fact, in a sense it's pretty smart: they're relying on your children being vaccinated so that their children don't contract measles. The math works as long as there are a sufficient proportion of people who feel a responsibility to society at large to vaccinate their children for the good of the herd.

A portion of the population isn't very good at doing ANYTHING for the good of the herd (see: taxes).

Hey, cousin. You might want to check out the history of disability rights--severe learning disabilites, for example, are not called the r-word anymore, and that's actually a slur people use against everyone with disabilities. High-functioning is also basically meaningless; that just means people like you more.

Right now, in some basement, some asshole is "fixing" this by replotting the 'complications' graphs versus the population that experienced side effects, because that's the "fair" comparison.

Mostly not fatal. I believe Retts syndrome falls under the Autism umbrella and you'll live til your 20 IF you're female. Males rarely live past infancy. But, I highly doubt most people have heard of Retts.

Still less common a death than measles.

My three year old showed milestone red flags when he was two and he's now been assessed as being on the spectrum. Half the battle of being a parent of an atypical child is that most people don't understand what the word even means. I loathe to interact with the anti-vac part of our community but many are just lost and confused and only a handful are willfully ignorant.

The purported autism connection made (in particular, religious) right wingers go haywire -- my sister being one of them -- because they're perfect marks for "oh god what did i do to make my child this way??!" derpiness where only jeebus and personal responsibility mean anything in life, and of course jeebus would never do such a thing.

Yes it was more concentrated in the hippie community for some years, but oh boy you have no idea how overrun Yahoo/Google/yadda groups are with religious right wingers and the antivaxxing.

Add in the always-idiotic big-L Libertarians who would never prioritize anything that would expressly benefit society as a whole, and with their influence over conservatism?... you've got a whole boatload of conservatives across the nation who think they know better than them science people, and gubbermint their enemy (Reagan-era mong-mongering), etc.

It's not a lefty thing by any stretch of the imagination, in the present.  I've lived the religious right wing version and have lived in a lefty-AF city almost all of my 51 yrs... .it's very much a part of American conservatism.  AWWW MYAAAAAN hippies, sure, them too.

Like I said, when you study disability history, that doesn't really prove true. Most of the criterea they use to judge 'high' or 'low' functionin are things like eye contact or how much you talk; they're not actual indicators of how well you'll do in life.
