Ok, now I'm ready to watch Apple fanboys defend a $1000 phone.

2020-01-10 12:16:50 PM
Some of those features, like the in-screen fingerprint sensor and four-camera setup, aren't even found on Apple's iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max.

Um. OK.

I guess if you want those features, you'll have to accept Android OS.

/I'm going over to the Sports Tab and see if I can troll some people about how much their bikes cost.

As someone who gets furious when I have to place my finger some other place on the phone other than the screen for a fingerprint read, this is important to me.

/keeps phone unlocked
//doesn't need SCIF-level security to protect my musings

Regular security updates?

I switched to an iPhone after using nothing but Android since the HTC Hero. Security updates were the reason.

/Yes I know get a Nexus / Pixel but I like a working Bluetooth stack.

So, what kind of processor is it running, and how long does the battery keep it running? The iPhone 11 Pro is the fasted mobile phone out there, and the battery life is incredible. Also, Face ID is much quicker than a fingerprint scanner in most cases.

I mean, that's pretty much every Android phone.

* Drag-n-drop music, photos, and other data without needing iTunes or some walled garden? Check.
* SD card slot to expand storage space for media?  Check.
* The ability to get into your phone if you forget your password (i.e. "The phone doesn't lock itself permanently and turn into a brick because you need to reset it")?  Check.
* The ability to change the launcher (main screen/GUI) in every single way? Check.
* The ability to load apps from other sources without having to jailbreak? Check.
* The ability to enter Developer Mode and speed things up by turning off all the animations? Check.
* The ability to flash an entirely new custom firmware and get the features you want? Check.

I've had both. My partner still has an iPhone. Every time I think of going back, I realize I've gotten way to used to being able to do what I want with my phone, and know that being tied to iTunes-- as I am with my iPad-- is not something I want in a mobile phone.

I don't know.. I tend to avoid buying a phone from a Chinese state-owned company.

Wasn't TCL selling good TVs at very reasonable prices... because they were selling user data to marketing firms?

TCL is notorious for selling user data. That's very different when it's a TV than when it's a phone.

Is that any different than Google?  Just look at Ad Choices in a Chrome Browser,it is in some ways more invasive.

Um, that is a feature, not a bug. And you can set it to give you unlimited tries at your password. Being able to easily get around a password kind of negates the purpose of a password.

Given the price point and features, maybe not anymore.

This has also been possible without iTunes for quite some time. Just how old is your iPad that you need iTunes?

Picture was probably taken with an iphone.

I just want to be sure that all the data on my phone is backed up to open Chinese servers every few days.

WilderKWight: * SD card slot to expand storage space for media? Check.

This will always be the biggie for me since I want to hear all my music I've ripped into FLAC.

Fark this streaming BS; I want to hear my music, at the highest resolutions possible, on my terms and not when their's a strong enough signal to do so.

*Having to use iTunes is kind of a pain, I guess. It never really bothered me enough to want to switch back to Android.
*SD card slot is also nice, but I really don't need it. Currently I'm only using  65GB of my 256GB storage on my phone.
*The phone locking permanently is a security feature, and if you forget your password, it's disabled, and not bricked. You can reset the phone, and restore it from the most recent backup. You do back up your devices, right?
*The ability to change the launcher is a nice feature. I found most launchers from the Android phone manufacturers to be a bit sucky, and loaded with bloatware.
*Loading Apps from other sources? Nope, not doing that.
*Developer mode. I guess if your phone is slowing up from animations.
*If you have to flash your firmware to get useful features, then something was wrong with the phone you purchased.

See. My list is also somewhat pointless, since different people want different things from their phones.
Most people just want a phone that's good to go out of the box, and are not concerned about the ability to 'customize' their phone, and possibly brick in the the process.

You can turn the flash off on any phone.

But if not having to find that setting is worth $500 - $1,000 to you, enjoy.

I have owned Android phones since the first Motorola Droid.
And I'm right there with you. I am not a fan of apple, especially when it comes to getting data, pics, music etc off the phone, but they have handled security and privacy better than the others.
I may end up getting an iPhone for my next phone soon.
I'd I can get a good deal on one.

Yeah. They actively work to close exploits, especially when third party hacking companies find new ways for law enforcement to break into them. Apple has a track record of giving a shiat about it.

Also, my work has a BYOD policy but will turn off access if your phone is more than two months behind the latest updates. I've watched my coworkers with Samsung phones lose email on their phone for a month or so waiting for the quarterly updates.

It's not that I have anything to hide, it's the principal of it.

And yeah the lack of headphone jack is a real pain in the butt.

2020-01-10 2:57:40 PM
Wait, why is this getting hyped up?

It just looks like your regular mid-high end Chinese brand phone.

All new features + at a low price with poor support. There will be a dozen brands with phones like these offering features the incumbent companies don't have at half the price, that's just Android.

It's a pretty poor hype job as well, no specs to allow you to compare it to other devices of its class.

Mi Mix 3s are cheap now, bought one for my partner, they're VERY cool phones.

No worries, it's got a built in x-ray that blasts your balls through your pocket.
Every time it detects movement it gives your balls a good blast of radiation so when you finally pull it out of your pocket it knows that you were the one that did it.The only drawback is that it might run a false positive on next of kin, but after enough doses...I mean checks that will stop being a risk.
