Sleep is essential for both cognition and maintenance of healthy brain function. Slow waves in neural activity contribute to memory consolidation, whereas cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) clears metabolic waste products from the brain.

So, the "defragging" simile is covered, here. Still pretty cool.

The human brain is so powerful it can only be run for a few hours at a time.

TL/DR: The brain, only during periods of very deep sleep, actually sends pulses of cerebro spinal fluid to flush the brain clean of waste products. This is also important, as it sheds light on Alzheimers and the role sleep plays (or lack thereof) contributing to the disease.
