Has anyone tried to get a statement from Montana's Representative, Greg Gianforte?

There are a multitude of situations/actions that we've never needed to legislate before this administration. It's sickening.

Threatening and attacking people is, in fact, already a crime is all 50 states.

Even things we do legislate are ignored. Sexual assault, conspiracy, obstruction, light treason, etc.

They'll use this to close down CNN, NBC and the BBC.

Technically, most of the shows on Fox News are "Entertainment" programs, rather than News.

No Republican in the senate will vote for this. Trump will veto it. What a waste of time.

I'd be wary of unintended consequences.

Clearly we don't want to allow people to threaten the Press, but it's probably a good idea to take a step back and see if there isn't some other way to accomplish the goal of preventing an idiot President from shiatting all over everything.

I was addressing the headline. I know I don't look like I need schooled, thankyouverymuch.

It's not exactly like a whole hell of a lot is getting done with our stonewalling Congress.

Hell with the state of the Senate, no bills getting passed is the best we can hope for other than impeachment hearings.

Yep. Especially in 2019 where every asshole with a political agenda and a cell phone is a Youtube 'journalist'.

You might think you're punching a run-of-the-mill Nazi, but it's going to turn out they're working for Der Stürmer II.

Lol. Rules only apply to little people. Orange Americans are completely immune.

You know, I am ok with punching even second or third string pretend Nazis. They'd punch you and everyone that you love if they thought that they could get away with it.

Yeah, I'm not sure what this would accomplish either.  The video of Trump killing things they cited in the article, as distasteful as it is, would pretty clearly fall under free speech parody and satire.  Any case that could be legally determined to be threats of violence and carrying out actual violence would already be illegal.

No need to create a seperate law - just add it as an enhancement to the RICO statutes - organized attempts to intimidate the press should be prosecuted as racketeering.

I was a newspaper editor and reporter for 33 years. Threats are pretty common ("I know where you live"). Only once did someone actually physically react on me to a specific story or general coverage. We're not a protected class.

While I find Trump as despicable as anyone can, "fake news" and "enemy of the people" are a far cry from "one of my supporters should literally kill Anderson Cooper".

I think freedom of speech is the most important right we have in this country and we should seriously be cautious about some vague idea of what is considered and 'attack' or 'threat'.  Who gets to define these terms? What language constitutes an attack/threat?

I hate what Trump is doing, but if we really cherish the constitution, we have to be careful how we react to it

Maybe if we lied to Trump and claims it only protects Fox News since to him all the rest are fake news?

Still laugh over some things in the newspaper biz during my years in the California desert, like when we got a credible threat and received "security" at our bureau.

Which would be the oldest guy employed by a security agency (and probably the cheapest one in the area).

And considering the fact it was a senior citizen community, it might as well been Don Knotts dressing up for Andy Griffith fans.

/did have colleagues who got the attention of Jesus Wants Us to Kill Teh Gheys types, "The Food Pantry is Communism!" folks, as well as bikers, drug dealers and neo-Nazis
//had to kill some feature ideas because of how the local yokels might react to stuff like a mosque in town

I soundly disagree, by killing this Bill the Republican leadership is on record saying that threats and violence is okay.

That may not have meaning to Republicans, who seem to consider it a right, but it is a good way to motivate Democrats. Remember, Republicans are only 24% of the country.

Wasn't being snarky, it just needs to be repeated that what is happening is not acceptable.

It's not a separate, specific crime to threats and violence against any number of things I can enumerate.

I guess you think it's OK to threaten orphans with violence, though, since you're not demanding a law that explicitly covers them.

Actually.

I worked at a computer store. Dude decided he hated us and proceeded to call over 100 times that day.

Kept calling me by my first and last name, said he knew where I lived, was stalking my wife on facebook, was going to kill my family, was going to come to the shop to kill me while I was at work.

The best the police could do is go after him for tying up a business line.

So nope, attacks and threatening attacks in America don't actually mean shiat until someone has shot you or is invading your home.

Just wanted to point out that until shiat actually happens the police tend to not give a shiat about someone screaming I'm gonna kill you, unless you know a business phone line was tied up.

Please do pass this bill. It would be great if the FBI investigated and prosecuted incidents like the left-wing mob that attacked and beat journalist Andy Ngo last June.

It's not a federal crime because it's already illegal at the state level. I'm not sure threatening the news reporter from the local daily newspaper needs to be a federal crime.

When Republicans threaten violence to orphans then they will also require separate protections.

Call it the "will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest" rule. When the President and his party motivate their ardent followers to violently attack a group someone should protect the innocent.

Protect how?  Is it your belief that threatening the media and/or orphans is currently legal?
