I do that whether there are fires or not. The San Fernando Valley is just a place for backyard pornography production.

I've been checking the local TV here because I live in Los Angeles (County), but cerebrovascular, there's sports and some thingy about an Australian man-made surfing pool. I believe auto-correct somehow changed "currently" to "cerebrovascular."

My family used to be real big in that part of California. We opened a riding academy where the Miracle Mile Shops are now from the 1920s-1950s where Walt Disney used to play polo and poker (Disneyland was partially our fault). My granduncle also bought up tons of Japanese-American farms there during the Internment. When he found out he had no business playing farmer he started building apartment buildings and business offices.

Old Town Pasadena used to be cool before the Loch Ness Monster Pub closed.

When I moved here 30 years ago, Old Town was mostly junkies and hookers.  The only reasons to go there was a movie theater and the area's only Arizona style Mexican restaurant.  (RIP Ernie Jr's).

Now there's a Tiffany's where the former used to be, and Le Pain Quotidian in place of the latter.

The porn shop and the Pawn shop and Russel's (an old school burger and pie diner) are still there, though.  I hear the city wants them to stay for their "atmosphere"

I avoid old town more now than I did then.

/also miss Planet 10, a real honest to goodness SciFi bookstore

I guess they wanted to go far enough west to include the "Herion" users in Simi Valley.

What would they say about the eastern portion? There's a bunch of studios, another freeway, and another airport, all surrounded by urban sprawl.

I've wondered the same thing about the reference to "drinking the Kool-Aid". It references an event in 1978, but the expression only popped up ~20 years later.

Maybe.   I remember a friend trying to tell me a joke about Jim Jones, but the punchline was too long.

Right after it happened.   Also, the above was pretty much the joke.   They finally had to explain it to me...."ooooohhhhh".

There were references and jokes from the start, but the use of the expression as a colloquialism, for blind loyalty or going along with the party line, seemed to start suddenly in the late 1990s.
