Back when I was in college I drove a 98 Chrysler Sebring convertible

Me n the roommate split the cost of a cheap thrift store couch, but during the summer we had nowhere to keep it.

We eventually found a student house nearby that would keep watch and make sure it didn't run away. But transport involved bungee cords and/or humans holding a couch in place while it was laid across the rear seats of my convertible. Top down

I moved that couch back n forth like a dozen times like that. Worked like a charm

It's a tad bit over the limit.

What kind of word is tad?

From Tad:

1877, "young or small child," probably a shortened form of tadpole, which is said to be the source of Tad as the nickname of U.S. President Lincoln's son Thomas (1853-1871). The extended meaning "small amount" is first recorded 1915.

It's a young word! I'd surely thought it had been in our English for many centuries. It's just a little meme.

What an idiot. Everyone knows you should use duct tape for a load like that...

2019-10-12 06:36:15 AM
The load looks like it was well secured, doesn't look to be too high up or sticking too far off to the sides, and there's still visible space above the back tires, so it's not weighed down. They're in town, not on the highway, so if the guy didn't have far to go it should have been just fine.

Perhaps, but someone who thinks that driving a Mercedes is the same experience as driving a Toyota has not experienced both makes.

The only interesting story from the one year I was "away" for college involved hauling a boxed Ikea futon frame with one of my roommates through the mass of humanity that is 34th St. in Manhattan from Penn Station to the R train. If only because I was the one that volunteered to walk backwards.

So getting a kick, etc.

/99.9% people have way better college stories, I assume

An early 2000s E-class? Those sell for like $2,500 these days in great condition. Then again, that car was also Mercedes' low point for quality, so they might be spending that money on keeping the thing running. No, seriously- that car is the worst car Mercedes ever built.

ReapTheChaos: The load looks like it was well secured,

Ya think? Looks like they've tied one of the straps to the back of the passenger side headrest. What kind of load is that rated for? Same with the strap secured to the boot lid hinge.

The lower chair doesn't have its own strap, so it's just the weight of the upper chair and its strap holding it on.

doesn't look to be too high up or sticking too far off to the sides, and there's still visible space above the back tires, so it's not weighed down. They're in town, not on the highway, so if the guy didn't have far to go it should have been just fine.

The speed limit in town would be between 20-50, with most streets at 30. Will the straps and load be secure at such a speed? Also, it's Glasgow, and if you look at Google maps for the pub that's in the background, you'll see that it's right beside several motorways, so, potentially they were planning on going on the motorways, up to 70.

Regarding actual laws about loading, most of what I've found have covered heavier goods vehicles rather than cars, the only stuff I found regarding cars in brief Googling suggests that you can get busted for stunts like this. I'd guess that you'd be OK in general if you've got something just sticking out of the boot, perhaps, as long as you've got it bungeed shut, but "dangerous driving" in its nature leaves something up to the interpretation of the filth.

Meanwhile, dude could have rented a van for ~£40, which is probably less than what the fine for loading like that was.

They do realize you can rent a pickup from Home Depot or Lowes for like $30 don't they?

2019-10-12 10:22:17 AM
Overloaded sedan in the picture notwithstanding, it's actually common for German luxury cars to NOT have leather seats.  They know that a huge chunk of their customers are buying for the name and badge, so the cars often have plastic seats that look like leather.  Mercedes calls theirs MBTex and BMW calls theirs Sensatec.

This story is from Scotland, I don't think they have those there. Besides, not all Home Depot's and Lowes' have equipment rentals, none of the ones here do. You can get a pick-up at U-Haul for $20 though, but again, this is Scotland.

CSS: In the 70s, my dad owned a beautiful Mercedes, black with red leather seats. However, it did not have air conditioning. And we lived in Charlotte, a city where summer temperatures, even back then, got up in the low hundreds from time to time. Black car. Leather seats. No a/c. Good times.

~£20-~£50 for 24 hour van rental in Glasgow, depending on size.

/Strangely, the results I got included a pickup at ~£377, which is a bit mad.
//Does the same as a van, without weather and theft protection.
