I had to look,a 7 watt 445nm-450nm blue laser $248 with free delivery. If someone  had just minor skills it could be a fun and pretty dangerous toy.

I don't know a damned thing about lasers (apart from what you can learn watching a 20 minute Youtube video) but most of the really powerful ones available on Amazon seem to not be battery powered, although I'm sure that with a soldering iron and some additional materials, one could make them so.

This is the smallest and cheapest of the items found when searching for "laser engravers"...
https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-Focus-100-240V-Engraving-Modulewith-Heatsink/dp/B076KKQK41/ref=sr_1_41?keywords=laser+engraver&qid=1570821469&sr=8-41

While these are dangerous and they'll undoubtedly become smaller and more ubiquitous over time, these larger lasers probably aren't the sort of thing your drunken brother-in-law is going to be aiming at aircraft at the end of a Labor Day BBQ.

Amazon sells all sorts of shady Chinese stuff.

I have a green laser pointer from them that's just a weee bit more powerful than is kosher.  Well, it's not a "laser pointer" since a laser pointer of more than 5mW output is illegal.  (You can own more powerful lasers, but just not call them laser pointers)

It's just the same size and shape as a laser pointer and has "Green Laser Pointer" marked on the box.

But it does have a keyed lock for safety so its all good.

I'm pretty sure that if I can jump up into the air and into a plane's cockpit at 30,000 feet and blind the pilot with a short-range focused laser, I could also instead carry a brick and bash the pilots brains out. So, better ban bricks cuz that's gonna happen sooner or later!?

The cost of adding a plastic enclosure and an interlock can't be that high.  Maybe $20-30 for the box and a buck for the switch, and 5 cents for the metal for grounding it properly, plus shipping.  It would still let them sell a ~$200-300 product instead of a $2000-3000 one.

I've zapped my hand with a 5 Watt Argon-ion laser and got a nice deep burn in under half a second. Comparisons to non-coherent energy sources are bullshiat. 5 Watts in an area of 1 mm^2 gives a second degree burn faster than you can pull your hand out of the way. Into the eye it will cause a permanent blind spot faster than you can blink. Due to the collimated beam a laser is dangerous at a range of several thousand meters if the divergence is small. There is a serious risk of putting these sorts of things into the hands of idiots and miscreants.  Selling non-interlocked high power laser devices should at minimum open the seller and anyone who facilitates the sale (yes, you, Mr. Bezos) to lawsuits with serious punitive damages.

Seriously? The 40 watts (40 joules per second) that heats that wire could burn a decent size hole in you. A CO2 laser with HALF that power can cut thinner steel. Sure, it takes 4KW to cut half inch plate steel, but small arms bullets can't penetrate that.

"I'm almost too embarrassed to admit it but I just got bit by my laser for the third time in about 3 weeks. I got careless and test fired the laser onto my finger."

madgonad: The 40 watts (40 joules per second) that heats that wire could burn a decent size hole in you.

Sure, if you focused it and just let it sit on you, and if it was the right wavelength.  I used to work for a laser integrator, and I've been burned by focused 100 watt CO2 units (10600 nm) more times than I can remember.  The best was when we were testing a new system that marked moving objects on the fly, and that sumbiatch burned a clearly visible serial number on my arm when one of the proximity sensors failed and tripped a marking cycle.  Was only a second-degree burn though, and after about a week the number wasn't legible anymore.

On the flip side, putting an defocused beam from a 100 watt YAG unit (1064 nm) on your hand results in just feeling a little bit of warmth.  The CO2s were actually safer, because if you caught the beam or a strong reflection in your eyes, it burned the cornea, whereas the YAG would toast your retina.
