Nah, it's fine. No need to have a the bomb magnet there right now.

It's not like we have other carrier battle groups nearby...

This is Trump's chance to buy Russia's coal-rollin' carrier at a discount. Do his boss a solid, plus show his base in coal country he hasn't forgotten them. Genius!

They're gonna let one of those fragile things out in the ocean without its defense ships?

Sounds suicidal.

/It's not that pretty much anybody can't take out a carrier with the other boats.
//It's that if they're not there, not only can they take out the carrier, the mission is survivable.

What's the point of a carrier battle group if there is no carrier. Every other ship is there, in some way, to support the carrier. It would be if like the entire presidential support team flew to other country on a diplomatic mission, but the president stayed home and ate ice cream. What the hell are they suppose to do there?

Your hypothetical situation would be the most successful diplomatic trip ever.

FTFA; Without a carrier to protect, SAGs can load up on offensive missiles such as the Tactical Tomahawk land attack cruise missile, capable of striking targets nearly a thousand miles away.

Hrmm...I wonder.

Oh look guys, its Mr "Oh look at me! I actually read the articles so I know what the fark I am talking about, and not just blasting words out of my ass." Dude, if you want to read, go on Reddit. This is Fark. By not RTFAingn, it gives us more precious time to spout nonsense and post pictures of cats and/or boobs.

You'd think, but it's in reality about as easy as "just fixing" any other deployment issue - on the water or off.  Every time you change one unit's deployment, you need to sort out the hole you just left in the other unit's deployment plans by doing so.  Fixing that hole then creates another hole and so on, and so on... seriously it's pretty much inception military style.  You do much of that, and you end up with everything pretty much full on FUBAR with units running past maintenance times and not enough units where they need to be to meet requirements at all.

They don't plan things out to 18 decimal places just because they like to feel important - it really is 100% necessary to avoid a complete clusterfark.  This is why they don't just "fix" things unless it's an emergency - the solution is oh so much worse than the problem.

They should just turn it into a cargo cult--it's how we're treating everything else these days. Just slap a crappy handpainted banner on one of the DDGs that says "CaЯ RiER" on it and pretend, and if anyone says, "That's not a carrier, and also where did you learn your handwriting skills," just point at them and scream "FAKE NEWS!!!" until the shut up.

Question. I've been on a few naval bases (which one has the McDonalds built right smack dab in the parking lot for all the ship personnel? Oceana?) and I've see the bad ass carrier sitting right there. Being Army, I've never been on a Navy ship.
Will they let any asshole with a military ID come on to the carrier to check it out? Like could I walk up the guard and say "Hey! I work for the government too! What are the odds? You mind if I trot around the flight deck for a while? Maybe check out the CIC or nuke plant?"?

I mean we'd let a Squid come on to an Army base and drive around and check if out. As long as you're not getting into the ASP or tromping the the General's petunias while you check out his hot daughter from her bedroom window, we dont really care.
And do you have to be active, or can you be retired? I've always really wanted to see a carrier.

Do you think they'd let me launch shiat off the cat? I'd love to see what a bowling ball does.

My memory fades a little on this but there used to be ship assigned on the weekends as a visit ship. This would allow visitors onboard to be escorted around and ask questions. It looks like the only you can do now is get on a tour bus and be driven around.

Never in the service but I've personally been aboard 2 aircraft carriers, 2 amphibious assault ships, an Arleigh Burke, an at-sea replenishment ship, and a nuclear sub (don't remember the class) and a handful of other less awesome U.S. Navy warships.

I happen to live in Fort Lauderdale, and especially before 9/11, when the ships were tied up in Port Everglades they almost always offered tours. Can't tell you how cool it was to ride a plane elevator up to the top of the carriers or to be able to traverse a HUGE gun while looking through a little periscope window.

Submarine was especially awesome. That tour was near the end of my Boy Scout career (circa mid 90's) and I remember how amazingly tiny it was inside, and I also fully remember how one of the Pack Mom's couldn't make it down the ladder and had to wait in the hot sun for us for what seemed like at least an hour. To us Scouts, the berths didn't seem so bad compared to camping but looking back there sure wasn't any room for privacy.

I know they still do tours during Fleet Week but it's a much bigger pain to get on site with the elevated security measures.

Point being, you may not get on a naval base to have a look but I am sure if you find a major port and wait for the right time you could get on board a carrier.

At least now I know why the Truman didn't nope out of here like everyone else did when Dorian was about to brush the area.

We made plans to bring her to NNSY, but the pathing shifted enough before she began her trek.

Call and ask, basically.  Just about any base of size has a PR office that among other things exists to handle questions like that.  They'll be able to tell you what's up with what, but accessibility is going to vary a lot by location, current tasking of units in the location, etc.   Yeoman will usually be able to send you a schedule, if anything's available.
