The DEA estimates 3.4 million Americans misuse prescription painkillers

I don't know how they can have an even marginally realistic number for this, and I suspect that this one is far too low.  Everyone I knew in the past who was involved was getting pills from people with prescriptions.  I don't know how the government can even come close to estimating what's being sold by people who appear to be just taking their monthly prescription, staying out of trouble.

This story is really engrossing, but unfortunately it's because it's so awful.  Thanks subby, I suppose

Wow. Tramadol is what the vet gave me for my dog when she was dying from bone cancer. Told a friend of mine who is a disabled marine veteran and he gave me over 100 more. Said he has an endless supply from the VA. After my dog died I them them away. Glad I never took any. I went through eight months of physical rehabilitation and refused all pain medicine stronger than Advil. I feel that I dodged a bullet there. I was aware of the opiod epidemic and told the many doctors treating me after my industrial accident that I didn't want prescription medication. Mostly out of fear of being robbed. I did however take all my antibiotics as prescribed. Just pot and booze for me thanks.

I suffer chronic pain.
I take nothing for it but exercise.

(Anecdotally) Yet every person* I meet is either on opiods for something or has a magic marijuana card for something. Or is taking some prescribed "antidepressant".

People seem to be debilitated all over.

* People in wheelchairs, for some reason are the exception.

Went through the whole Boy Scouts thing in my teens. Some would say it's atypical. Had an uncle as assistant scoutmaster that pushed my cousins promotions and negated mine until they had already surpassed me every time. Then we had the Head Scoutmaster that wanted use the single mothers as his own personal harem.

Combine that with internal politics and other bullshiat: Unless you were a lying, cheating, and a complete psychopath; you'd never make Eagle.

For traffickers, the profit margins are irresistible: The DEA estimates a kilogram of fentanyl synthesized for a few thousand dollars could make a dealer more than $1 million.
"Any moron can basically become a major drug kingpin by dealing in fentanyl," said Vigil. "You can have somebody with an IQ minus 100 who becomes an overnight multimillionaire."

Damn, a horrible combination of people with serious opiate addictions and people who have no scruples in how they make money. It's the perfect ingredients for a disaster on a societal scale.

So . . . what does his long-past involvement with the Boy Scouts have to do with this drug dealing? I mean, it's in the title and everything, so it must be important.

Worst my troop ever did was selling that cider one year which had been pressed with already-fermenting apples and not properly pasteurized. Best tasting, and selling, cider we ever sold.

FYI: Everyone uses drops/unsellable apples for cider.  Why waste perfectly good ones?  And at least here in NH, they stick a label on the cap if it hasn't been pasteurized, just in case the elderly or infirm get their hands on the good stuff.

Maybe it's time for a book of stories about fallen Eagles.  Give a chapter to this guy, and another one for the guy who built a cyclotron in his woodshed to purify samples of Americium from smoke detectors.  There's been two million Eagles, so surely we can find about fifty enterprising criminals to write about.

In Utah, all boys are forced to be Boy Scouts, and are fast-tracked to Eagle rank. Everywhere else, (where boys have a choice) bad apples usually don't choose the scouting path, as it is demanding, and the leaders are always asking you to be trustworthy, loyal helpful, etc, etc.

So, outside of Utah, this POS would probably not be an Eagle Scout.

For those 'Citation needed' folks, here ya go:

Total Eagle Scouts in 2017:  Top five states/Number of Eagle Scouts
1     Utah 5,879
2     California 5,028
3     Texas 4,231
4     Pennsylvania 2,456
5     New York 2,240

It's even more evident when you adjust for state population. Utah is an Eagle Scout mill, so of course, some of the boys will be 'baddies'.

Well, not so much Utah as the LDS church was an Eagle Scout mill, but that's over now.

Real cider should have a bit of fermentation, yes. Windfalls are usually fine. Even bruised, to a point. Due to some a few new members, punks and morons ended up putting really far-gone apples into the bushels. The cider the troop normally sold each year was family friendly. What we made that year was unintentionally hard. And I mean hard. But it was good (I was only eleven, but even I enjoyed it.) When we discovered how strong it was after pressing, we sold it anyway and made a killing.
