We have to drastically improve socioeconomic conditions in this country if we want to go beyond "moar bandaids".

Then we wouldn't have our current administration.

/probably our country's pathetic response

You mean the American attitude of "fark you, go die in whatever way that inconveniences the rest of us the least." might not be the wisest decision?

Imagine a modern remake of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest where Trump Tower has been converted into an insane asylum. Hell, it'd be better than Batman's Arkham Asylum

Mental illness is an issue only because ammosexuals want some political cover to continue stockpiling weapons, and addiction is an issue only because it's now affecting white and rural populations.

Just like when we landed a man on the moon to win a dick-measuring contest with the USSR: even on those rare occasions when Americans do the right thing, they do it for the wrong reasons.

Buttigieg wants to require health insurance companies to provide mental health and addiction treatment on an equal footing with other physical conditions, to reduce deaths from drugs, alcohol and suicide.

"For years, politicians in Washington have claimed to prioritize mental health care while slashing funding for treatment and ignoring America's growing addiction and mental health crisis. That neglect must end," Buttigieg said in a statement before the plan's release.

These all sound like great reasons to have single-payer medical coverage, Mr. Mayor.

Targeting mental illness, or targeting the mentally ill? Asking for a friend.

Suicide is the 10th or so leading cause of death in the US. Suicide is generally attributed to mental instability, how that that not a worthy cause to spearhead?

See how many suicides are committed using guns, and then you'll understand. Studies have shown that people who attempt and fail to commit suicide almost never attempt suicide again. Easy access to tools (guns) that make so many suicide attempts successful (as opposed to pill overdoses, wrist-slitting, etc., which leave plenty of time for intervention) has made suicide an artificially common cause of death in the US.

He is the only one with a passable plan to get us to single-payer.

It sounds like a good reason to have universal health care. Why does it HAVE to be single payer? The goal is to get everyone healthcare and there are several ways to do it. For example, Germany has universal multi payer. There's no reason not to look at every implementation and evaluate what's best for the US.

I think Buttigieg has the smartest, most evidence-based proposal and will therefore help the most people.

But that would eliminate the privatized death panels AND prevent rich assholes from profiting - disgustingly so - on the misery of sick Americans.

/The health insurance industry parasite is VERY well entrenched

I'm a Warren democrat, and I agree with her on virtually every position-- but damn he makes half measures sound good.

I'm glad someone is pointing out addiction is a mental health related issue. Well, I mean also the brain getting physically addicted as well... Well, I think you know what I mean.

I still remember my mother being disgusted a long time back about being directed to a mental health clinic that also had a lot of information about drug addiction and people being treated for it, and thinking that her line of thought was rude, but I held my tongue. I didn't end up staying there for an unrelated reason (I had extreme difficulty understand the accent of the psychiatrist I was assigned to; not to knock on them, this one's on my poor ability to decode some accents, my bad), but it's still stuck with me that even people close to me see addiction as a moral failing instead of an illness and makes me quite uncomfortable if the subject comes up.

"Let the invisible hand of the free market sort it out" isn't my idea of a passable plan, but that's what primaries are for. You vote for your choice; I'll vote for Warren.
