This is a (typically) great @politicoalex piece about Trump and Minnesota that gets at the overconfidence of Trumpworld. Jason Lewis lost a +1 Trump district by 6 points and... he's the statewide savior? https://t.co/2ZCJAcl9Hp

the president's advisers are formulating a strategy geared toward amping up conservative turnout in rural areas.

Formulating??? Trump and the Republicans already use sexism, racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and xenophobia as political weapons to ramp up their base. I'd say they are just staying the course.

I grew up there.  Despite how many 're-publicans' might live there, tRump is not going to win MN.  Minnesota-nice is a real thing, and it's still going to prevent MN from slipping into the jaws of Baalzebub.  (i.e. going "red")

In Minnesota, that means loading up on Trump, plus a rough facsimile of him. The 63-year-old Lewis, who lavished praise on the president during an October 2018 rally with the commander in chief, has embraced Trump's smash-mouth style as he rails against political correctness. He's hinted that he'll run as a Trump foot soldier, recently telling a Minnesota news outlet that "I don't think it pays to run away from a Trump presidency."

Campaigning on Trumpian Cruelty in a state which prides itself on Minnesota Nice doesn't seem like a winning strategy.

I love here, and yeah, we take MN Nice seriously as a heart attack.  That said, articles like this are more than enough to make me nervous, and I already do everything I can go get other sane people to the polls.

Yeah, Minnesota, let's all vote for the party that wants to completely dismiss one of our Reps and constantly spews racist crap at her.

Eff you Republican party.

Yeah, the GOP here (with some exceptions, of course) are more of the "business/small government" type than the "we hate gays and want to put children in cages" type.

I'd say some of the exurbs are probably as red as anywhere. A major contributor to the ascent of Michelle Bachmann to representing them in congress, after all, was her pushing virulently homophobic nonsense in the state legislature.

As in much of the country, several key rural areas in Minnesota have gotten redder too over time. The legacy of solid unionization in the iron range seems to have finally tapered off- the district there was one of three Republican pickups in 2018. One of the other ones was the district along the Iowa border.

That being said, Republicans have lost enough of the Twin Cities suburbs to counteract those rural gains. The president is probably the one to blame for that. Additionally, Amy Klobuchar's overwhelming victory in 2018 indicates that enough rural Minnesotans still appear to be very open to voting for the right kind of Democrat. If the frontrunner were a rank-and-file Republican in moderate's clothing in the style of Tim Pawlenty or Norm Coleman I'd be far more concerned. I don't see the clown highlighted in this article having a chance.

I still lived there when that abonanation passed.  Red-state lunatics invaded in 2010...thankfully, the real Minnesotans have slowly been clawing back their state ever since.  People like Bachmann are falling away, and becoming less and less relevant.

Let them ALL die off, and fall away...and take my state's people like Ryan, Walker, and Johnson with them.

No, the GOP / RNC is to blame for that...and they're owned by the President and his family.  ALL re-publicans are. you want to know who's to blame for any losses in "red" counrty?  Look at ALL members of the GOP.  ALL republicans are Donald Trump.  They're ALL responsible for his actions, and they will ALL sink with his proverbial ship.

In the MN republican primaries Donald came in 3rd (21%) to Marco's 1st with 36%.
Bernie had 61% here, Hillary 38%.

Its true Hillary barely won MN. That's because MN is filled to the brim with people sick and tired of republican vs republican-lite. MN wants change and ooga-booga-socialism-is-evil talk just flat out don't work here.

The winters are hard here, people know what it means to work together and look out for your neighbor. Our cities are a good mix of working class union-friendly types and very well educated liberals.

Any big time democratic socialist type (Bernie, Warren) would absolutely stomp Donald here.
