It would be a lot more informative if it the rankings were per capita rather than absolute.

That's not measuring wealth.  At best, if you want to put it in micro-economic terms, it's measuring income, and even then it's measuring the income of America, not Americans.

Americans are the 21st wealthiest people:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_wealth_per_adult

Japan also kicked some serious ass... until it wasn't kicking it. Although even with their visible slow down, they're still 3rd.

Even from 20 seconds in, there are problems. The USSR isn't even listed, so at best the entire thing is kind of disingenuous.

Being close-minded bigoted dickwads punched them in the dick. They've closed themselves to immigrants that may have addressed their demographic issues. Even immigrants of Japanese descent.

I know the USA is supposed to have a lot of money but it must be concentrated because everyone seems to live very poorly - bad quality food, have to drive everywhere, bad healthcare, poor health, work like slaves....

China's land mass (and therefore level of natural resources) is almost exactly identical to the United States, not four times as large.  You are right on pure population terms.

They have all that extra people but they're about to hit their own demographic crisis. The one-child policy helped control the growth but they've hit the imbalances between young/old and male/female. Even as they ease on the one child policy, they've ingrained it culturally. Now that they actually want people to have more children, they're having a hard time doing that, even with incentives and propaganda.

I wonder what happened in 1970 to make Monaco so wealthy in one burst.

Hey Canada made it on the list at the bottom..
Guess they're going to have to update this after England officially pulls the pin on the nuclear hand grenade they're sitting on called Brexit.
See how far and quickly they drop.

The problem for them is, they're not good at making smart decisions. They're blowing resources on massive ghost cities. They're alienating their neighbors. Instead of opening up to political reforms, they're doubling down and creating a cult of personality around Xi Jingping.

Ultimately, to be a superpower, the middle powers have to at the very least tolerate your vision for the world. China's not doing a great job of convincing middle powers right now. Now, the US isn't either, but that could change at any given four-year interval. It's never going to change in China, because the Communists are the One True Glorious Party.

I'm not a big fan of Trump, but I don't see how anyone, except CHINA, can figure that half trillion trade deficits are

a) good
b) sustainable
c) not making the world alot more insecure. And polluted.

Had America not sent so much manufacturing to China I don't think you'd have the inequality in wealth we have now. Much harder to unionize fast food peons. Robert Reich, Clinton's secretary of labor is a closet Commie, but he sometimes knows what he's talking about: if the wealth distribution in this country today was what it was in 1975 the average household income would be $90K, as opposed to 56K. Think about what sort of country America would be.

So, when Trump does this MAGA thing, I have admit in certain respects he has a point. The only candidate who gave a damn about income inequality was Sanders. Obama doesn't seem to have known it even existed until right at the end of his second term.

also gdp ppp is more realistic way people in other country dont pay u.s price for their things.

expat english teacher (so higher salary then normal people ) in china , can get a apartment eat out for every meal of every day , put 30% of their salary aside and get to do some travel 3-4 + times a year on 1800$ per month so .... and healthcare in a lot of country are free or inexpensive.

In Canada Glasses used to be hard to get outside the existing Clinics and costed 300+ a pair so i used to pick them up in China for 40$ and it financed a good part my trips.

Did same for Dental work(mexico will not do again doh she heated up some stuff in a spoon to inject me painkiller so pretty sketchy, but overall good work),

Pretty much can finance a month long trip by going outside your economic bubble.
