While I knew he was dead, I was surprised at how long ago Pavarotti died

I thought Placido died a few years back?

When President Donald Trump called the renowned deceased opera singer Luciano Pavarotti his friend late Thursday, the moment lit up the internet.
"Friend of mine, great friend of mine," Trump said of the rare maestro praising Italy's rich culture. While Trump was perhaps reflecting on his relationship with the bearded tenor before he died, that didn't stop people from having a field day.

Gilbert Gottfried is probably not immediately, available.

In Europe, there were no immediate cancellations of his performances and even some words of support for the star.

I thought the US was supposed to be backwards and Europe was all progressive and crap.

Or: In Europe, arts organizations don't panic immediately and do crap that the US companies do. The US companies mainly do it so that they can have plausible deniability later when it's found out that they tolerated such things as long as the person was bringing in donor money and putting butts in the seats.

I've been an opera fan since 1988, Domingo was largely responsible for LA Opera existing in the first place, he sang at the very first performance in 1986. Even back then it was gossip fodder that Domingo liked to get handsy with the pretty ladies.

Why it's blowing up now is moot, it reminds me a lot of the shocked! shocked I tell you!!! reactions from the Metropolitan Opera, Boston Symphony and others when it was revealed a few years ago that James Levine was a little overly friendly, IYKWIM, with teenage guys. It was common knowledge in opera circles in the freaking 1990's. I even saw him with one of his *cough* friends *cough* in the parking lot of the Met, he didn't even bother with the whole "Be discreet, you're with underage guys!!!" thing.

But the music was great, so it was all worth it.
