Bummer! I just submitted Salon's article on the same topic - with a much better headline, I might add.

Saudis say: Defend us, but don't offend us!
2002-01-25 09:30:38 AM
Your noble allies in the defence of oil sorry I mean democracy!
2002-01-25 09:32:15 AM

"It has begun!"
2002-01-25 09:32:35 AM
It never stopped Deus ;)

Committee for the Preservation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice

hehe, that's a good one . . . the committee doesn't seem to do anything to stop the wanton murder of innocents, a la TERRORISM!
2002-01-25 09:35:05 AM
I say if they don't like it we pull out and let them deal with Iraq on they're own. Drilling more in Alaska and pumping money into alternate resources and Russia's oil fields is worth never having to deal with anyone or anything in the Middle East ever again.
2002-01-25 09:35:57 AM
Personally I don't understand why certain cultures impose such rules on a persons dress, if you dont like what a perosn is wearing then look away.
2002-01-25 09:37:08 AM
What did I tell you? WHAT DID I TELL YOU? Watch...next move, the saudis are going to tell us to leave.
2002-01-25 09:38:15 AM
What did I tell you? WHAT DID I TELL YOU? Watch...next move, the saudis are going to tell us to leave.

Well, if I was an American I'd be happy to hear that.
2002-01-25 09:42:07 AM
They won't tell us to leave for a while. I lived there for a long time, and while they began replacing expatriots with Saudi employees (asking us to train them before we left), the major oil company (Saudi ARAMCO) won't survive with incompetent management. They've got to keep the Brits and Americans over there - they'll just box us in more and more until we get fed up and pull out.

Besides, Arab rules of hospitality prevent a host from asking a guest to leave. They'll just piss us off more an more until we say "screw 'em" and find other fuel sources.
2002-01-25 09:46:25 AM
Oh gee, imagine that, Harmonia made a snide comment about the intertwined relationship b/w our democracy and the need to protect our oil interests. Hahaha , that is SO original! You sure got me there!
2002-01-25 09:48:43 AM
Somebody was saying yesterday that the Saudi gov. didn't require women to be covered. Pah.

Too hell with the middle east. Skip SA, buy Russian oil, rejoin the internation fusion project and stop relying on oil. Then we can sit back and watch a load of medeval idiots fight to the death.
2002-01-25 09:50:14 AM
Oh gee imagine that, Oberon made a snide comment about my snide comment, that is SO original! you sure got me there!

2002-01-25 09:53:25 AM
BTW oberon what is the intertwined realtionshp between dermocarcy and oil, they have lots of one and none of the other, hardly an intertwining.
2002-01-25 09:55:27 AM
Hi there Harmonia! Are you still trying to play without supervision? Be careful, you might hurt yourself.
2002-01-25 09:58:33 AM
Perhaps tick, no chance of you doing it is there.

After all you only attack women online you being a christian and all.,
2002-01-25 09:59:08 AM
And by the way, although my mother and I often wore the abaya in the cities, we did so to avoid the sexual harrassment that would spew from the Saudi men who are taught from childhood that foreign women are whores.

It's a fundamental cultural difference and if we don't like it we should just get out. Granted, while on base and in US Gov. facilities, American law applies. But when you're out in the community, you've got to follow the laws of the country you're in - we expect the same of foreign workers in our own country. I certainly understand that the rule would rankle with US Servicewomen. It rankled with me. But we can't expect to have our cake (oil) and eat it too (flaunt Saudi custom, however distateful we may find it).
2002-01-25 10:00:36 AM
Let's not be snarky. Stick to the subject.
2002-01-25 10:04:53 AM
I've heard that women in the Saudi military don't have to be covered if they are in uniform. Anybody know if this is true or not?
2002-01-25 10:07:22 AM
Ah, Harmonia. I draw no distinction between the rantings of male and female farkers. I only look to their argument. But this is probably beyond your comprehension. And, as to my religious beliefs, your antagonism toward christianity is as well documented in your postings as your antagonism toward all western culture.

As to Saudi Arabia. They are medieval and doomed to fail in the long run -- probably to be replaced by (yet another) corrupt regime.
2002-01-25 10:09:17 AM
World War III is gonna be a blast.
2002-01-25 10:11:08 AM
I would love it if the US simply put it to the Saudi's this way. "Your customs and laws do not apply to our service people. They are here to protect your asses. Now, unless you want us to pull out and allow Saddam or some other greedy Arab that's eyeing your oil wells to invade your country, then you will back the fucl< off on this issue."
The Saudi's are looking for any excuse to ditch the US anyway, but they have to do it in a way that saves face. Fark the treacherous bastards. If we pull out, you can bet your ass that that the Saudi's will scream for help at the slightest indication that Saddam or someone else is going to try to take their shiat over.
I think that the Saudi's problem is that they're afraid that if their women see US servicewomen without an abeya and driving vehicles, that they'll have a hard time keeping the women in line. Either way, it's going to get interesting.
2002-01-25 10:15:10 AM
Fark 'em all except one, and he can fark himself.
2002-01-25 10:16:03 AM
Doofus, "...they'll have a hard time keeping the women in line." Good point -- modernity scares the heck out of the medieval mind.
2002-01-25 10:23:37 AM
"your antagonism toward all western culture."

*sigh* well if it makes you feel better believing that why not.

Although you coulod argue that as christ was hardly a westerner...... och I cant be bothered.
2002-01-25 10:31:36 AM
"..christ was hardly a westerner..." Christ probably was not, but Christianity is. As are most of the successful ideologies you so despise.
2002-01-25 10:32:51 AM
One would only think educated Farkers would be more tolerant towards a subject such as this. That does not seem to be the case.
2002-01-25 10:33:19 AM
Why is it so hard for you people to understand the basic facts?

Our military has to obey the local laws of the land!!! They aren't in the U.S. of A. - and we aren't in the business of imposing our will on soveriegn nations (though we are accused of it often enough by our enemies - especially France).

Complain all you want, but it's basically "tough titties" - McSally will find that our the first time she gets stoned inthe public square. I suspect if that happens, it will be reported that extremists gunned her down in a terrorist attack, to save face for the Saudis and the U.S.

That said, I personally don't think the Saudis' law is fair, but we Americans can't just stroll into any country and do as we please. If you want to change things, contact your local chapter of an international human rights organization and contribute in a useful manner. Otherwise, thank your lucky stars every day that you live in the greatest country on the planet.
2002-01-25 10:34:55 AM
Bob I have zero tolerance with the mentality of the Arab world toward women.
2002-01-25 10:38:56 AM
BenJeremy, sorry, but it's too much cultural ass kissing for me. Having respect for the Saudi's culture is impossible when they have no respect for women.
2002-01-25 10:40:19 AM
Wow... Harmonia's sounding more and more like Fb-'s leftist twin brother.

I can see this in the nest EU closed council meeting with the U.S., Russia, and China attending:

"All in favor of re-instituting the Imperial Roman methods for dealing with the Middle East, raise your hands..."

*unanimous vote*

Good, we'll begin mobilization to put those backwards farkers to the sword until their culture can only be studied through the texts of history.

Next item on the adgenda......

It's so nice to picture the easy way out of problems.
2002-01-25 10:42:31 AM
Hating a whole culture is hardly my bag.

Nice to see john is thinking, thinking like a Nazi, but at least thinking.
2002-01-25 10:47:19 AM
Harmonia, I seriously hope you die.
2002-01-25 10:48:22 AM
well, you know how jealous dem camels can get...
2002-01-25 10:49:29 AM
why do we pretend Saudi Arabia is our friend? The country is about as open to the west as Iran, and the only reason they even invited us in was the Iraqi army was on the border ten years ago. Anyone notice most of the terrorists and all of the money comes out of Saudi? We should be treating them like Pakistan.
2002-01-25 10:51:50 AM
Desynch, you are a sad wee texas boy.

Of course I will die, as will you too (sorry to be the one who has to break the bad news)
2002-01-25 10:55:12 AM
I second the "death to Harmonia" vote. I hearby invoke my fatwah against you. The streets will flow with your blood, Infidel.
2002-01-25 10:56:58 AM
Why don't the Saudis just be honest?
"Thanks US troops and US female troops for continuing to prop up our corrupt monarchy and our sleazy buddies in the oil business. But you understand that, like any other servants, we don't actually want to have to see you, so get back in your kennels, and if you dare walk outside cover up so our eyes aren't offended by your infidel customs."
2002-01-25 10:57:23 AM

Still if I doing a service by giving you a hate object at least i can die happy!

It might be enough to stop a school shooting somewhere!
2002-01-25 10:58:42 AM
And why cant the USA say:

"Look we know its a barbaric regime that tortures its own people, but we need the oil profits so we can get GWB re-elected so fark what ordinary Americans might think"
2002-01-25 11:02:34 AM
Is "Death to Harmonia!" the new "Fb- is the father"?
2002-01-25 11:03:37 AM
I'm glad articles like this are getting more attention. Saudi Arabia rarely gets bad press, even though it's probably one of the most oppressive countries in the world, far far more than China (which seems to be labeled as such a lot by Americans).
2002-01-25 11:10:29 AM
Harmonia, darling, do get a new line. The constant offering up of your opinion on what Americans think and what Americans are really like grows incredibly tiresome, in view of the fact that you aren't an American and are hardly an authority on the subject.
While I respect your right to speak your mind, it does grate that someone who touts themselves as openminded and intellegent, constantly infers that Americans are a collective Jethro bearing down on the world.
However lovely it must be to sit there smug and omnipotent, why darling, it's not at all becoming to you.
2002-01-25 11:10:39 AM
Cheers fellow scots person frank.
2002-01-25 11:10:49 AM
So, let me get this straight. Our servicewomen (is that politically correct?) are in Saudi, trying to protect them? So we are covering their asses, technically, but they are offended by ours? That's a new one for chauvinistic pigs everywhere.
2002-01-25 11:11:10 AM
My, my - we can be so very fickle in our attitudes.

How many times have you heard (or griped yourselves) about immigrants and international visitors not being able to speak the language/they smell funny/why can't they dress like normal/etc/etc....? Or how about the classic "if you don't like it then get out"? Or have been outraged of the "diplomatic immunity" loopholes?

I do not think it's unreasonable to expect a certain degree of compliance with local norms. If this was a business relationship, you can be sure that the women businesspeople would be donning abayas.

It is the appropriate, respectful behavior of a visitor. And I would think that would be more important considering our various and assundry vested interests there.
2002-01-25 11:15:24 AM
Diogenes, as I stated before, I cannot respect a culture that has no respect for women, therefore I don't see US servicewomen covering themselves with an abeya and not being allowed to drive vehicles as a reasonable request by the Saudi's.
2002-01-25 11:18:08 AM
Harmonia .. I am not a "wee" Texas boy..

I know that your attitude would take a 180 if any of us were to ever meet you. I would love to meet you, you socialist moron.

I wish Drew would just ban your dumbass. We are so sick of you.

*I say we start a "Get rid of Harmonia" petition*
2002-01-25 11:18:09 AM

In your post you say:

It is the appropriate, respectful behavior of a visitor. And I would think that would be more important considering our various and assundry vested interests there.

Just a for instance, but don't you think that it would be much better to be in pants for this type of a mission than a dress? Let's just have a little reasoning.
