I don't think they were expecting to win this argument. You don't win at this stage that often. I mean, the judge is likely to let ties go to the government because a jury will still get the final say.

You make the argument, lose, try the case to the jury...if you win the jury, it's over. If you are convicted, you have this issue to appeal.

And a non-zero number of white collar appeals get convictions tossed.

I would expect the Congressman to tie his family vacation and his work as an honorable attempt to use the benefits we have all experienced on government and corporate travel in a legal way. That is, one does work while on travel for government purposed, then separate from that government travel to join one's family on vacation in the same area as that work, having paid for the family's travel and expenses out of pocket.

I never did this particular scenario, but I have done ones similar, like flown to a country TDY for an exercise, then taken leave while the rest of the team returned to CONUS. I remained overseas to travel alone at my own expense, then returned at my own expense or simply hopped.

This dude tried to pull a fast one. So, like many enlisted and commissioned military personnel who committed similar fraud on their travel vouchers, this Congressman needs to be judged by a judge or jury, whatever he chooses.

/Asshat.

While it's nice to see a skeevy member of Congress getting his due, I'd much rather see court orders like this involving Trump. Trump's level of corruption makes Hunter look like a kid stealing candy bars.

It was beyond obvious that this guy was guilty as sin before he got elected. But the moronic family values voters don't care about stealing or fraud. They're also ok with an ahole who basically has tried to blame his crimes on his wife as a Legal strategy.

And by the way democrats could have won this seat but instead of picking a moderate for this red military district with a military background they decided to support the far left candidate who lost by 8 points.

Or - and hear me out - maybe the residents in this red military district elected exactly the asshole who represents them and their values.

Let's make room for that possibility.
