I expect sober, reasoned debate in this thread.

2019-06-27 10:34:35 AM
Democracy in the US has been on life support since Trump was "elected", but it truly died today.

2019-06-27 10:34:45 AM
Once again the bad guys win.
I hate this timeline.

2019-06-27 10:34:54 AM
Welp, hope you enjoyed democracy while you had it!

Almost as sober and reasoned as the ruling!

Supreme Court:

Representative Democracy Sucks.  Fark with it at will.

2019-06-27 10:35:31 AM
RIGGED!!!!

2019-06-27 10:35:45 AM
If you stayed home or voted 3rd party in 2016, you can shut the fark up about this. You do NOT get to have an opinion.

2019-06-27 10:35:48 AM
I see a further diminishing white majority transitioning into a minority going absolutely batshiat in an attempt to maintain power. Doubly so if the census question is ruled to be appropriate today. This decision is as bad as Citizens United and will guarantee further polarization of the electorate and may eventually hve exceedingly unpleasant consequences for the Republicans who are currently supporting it.

2019-06-27 10:36:09 AM
So the decision is apparently back to the states. Vote in your state elections, every single time. Gerrymandering is unamerican.

2019-06-27 10:36:12 AM
And yet conservatives will continue to whine endlessly about Maryland.

2019-06-27 10:36:20 AM
We all knew this was going to be the outcome.

They court has been building up to this decision this session with prior less important rulings where they pretended to be bipartisan by occasionally having a lackey (Gorsuch, Kavenaugh) moonlight on the liberal side of the bench. Now they can point to that and insist it isn't party before country.

2019-06-27 10:36:24 AM
No taxation without representation then.

2019-06-27 10:36:27 AM
Can't have our courts protecting our democracy.

2019-06-27 10:36:28 AM
So, now can we have a march on Washington MLK style?

2019-06-27 10:36:32 AM
How's that protest vote working it for you?

Well, in that case I encourage Blue states to get on it.

I haven't read the decision yet, but I have to say that while I hate political gerrymandering, I do think it's constitutional. I don't think it should be legal, and would support laws/amendments that abolish it, but I don't think the argument that it violates equal protection is very persuasive.

2019-06-27 10:37:19 AM
So, if the soap box and ballot boxes are no longer an option, what's left?

2019-06-27 10:37:38 AM
SCOTUS has also ruled the census cannot have the citizenship question added, by 5-4. Roberts joined the liberals.

2019-06-27 10:37:39 AM
I couldn't be less shocked if I were made of rubber.

Or maybe we need to accept that it is and we need to fight to defeat it.

Like civil rights or the right to vote.

2019-06-27 10:37:56 AM
Anyone have a non-paywalled version?

2019-06-27 10:37:57 AM
So the next thing will be that they'll demand the citizen question be put on the census. Book it, done.

2019-06-27 10:37:57 AM
Don't forget the leaked emails about this specifically state a desire to essentially disenfranchise black people.  This wasn't partisan it was racially motivated and clearly a constitutional issue

2019-06-27 10:38:05 AM
Well Dems, it's time to really fark with the GOP.

Switch parties, in name not function, and eat them from the inside out.

Release the RINOs!!!

Goddammit I knew they'd overturn Bombay v. Minneapolis Pee Wee Hockey with this court. I f*cking knew it.

2019-06-27 10:38:12 AM
what the fark

2019-06-27 10:38:18 AM
Roberts' opinion is basically "this would be hard to nail down, so we're going to make it someone else's problem"
Kagan's dissent is rather... scathing.

They rejected the change to the Maryland gerrymandering? So is that one ruling for and one against? I'm just going by the early notes in the Reuter's next article.

Just remember, BSAB and Trump and Clinton were exactly the same and I can stay home/vote Stein because it doesn't matter.

But I was told that racism was over and so we didn't need protections for non-whites.

Fark conservatism. It's a blight upon humanity.

2019-06-27 10:39:56 AM
If we don't get out and vote those farkers out in 2020, they will draw the district maps after the census and this time with no need to pretend fairness, and we can say good bye to any hope of decency, justice and equality in this nation forever.

ah, the final shard that shall complete the dark crystal that is Citizen's United
