But why I am commenting on my impending death, I have no idea.

A few years ago a motorcyclist went 100+ km/hr straight into the back of a bus. The bus was in the far right turn lane turning into a bus depot. The news articles went on for days because the rider was so young and it was a dangerous strip of road because motorcyclists kept on racing and crashing. They were afraid to say he died of extreme stupidity because it was impolite. The only way you're going to keep motorcyclists from Darwinning themselves is to ban bikes.

I would think Utah would be a good place to get a liver.

The ER doctor I met called them "donorcycles" ... also rode every day and always had 2 or 3 of them in his garage.

Ah, ok.  Way back in the day (60's) they were one of the few states that didn't.  Or am I confused?  Smoked a lot of herb when I was younger..

And the term donor cycle had been around for decades. Not so much about motorcycles being death machines, but more so that it is younger guys in good health that are the primary people dying on them (unfortunately often doing something stupid), and they are great candidates for harvesting organs.

Try '92. People I knew were threatening to sell their bikes, but they didn't. They just bought stupid beanie helmets that were guaranteed not to work. Total idiocy. I've always worn a full face, no matter how unstylish it might be seen to be in some quarters. 'Cause having an eye or a nose ground away by asphalt is an even worse look.

It's changing all the time. Here's the current situation. I lived in Illinois when they struck down the helmet law. That was before I started riding, and I thought it was seriously stupid. I ride now, and still think it's stupid that they struck it down. I live in a town where a major auto insurer is based and you probably see more ATGATT (All The Gear All The Time) riders in BloNo than anywhere else in the state. In theory, only eye protection is required. If I had a windscreen, I could ride stark naked were I so inclined.

A few years back they repealed the helmet laws in Michigan. Our auto insurance spiked, and the number of organ donors did, too.

Just like when they repealed the laws against fireworks. A few weeks later a church burned down, and many more fires have happened since then. Lots more fireworks injuries, too.

This is what happens when you have a Republican Governor who 'runs the state like a business' -- He throws bones to his business buddies in the insurance industry to increase their profit margins and decrease the value of life in the state.

Counting on the good judgement of your fellow motorists for your safety is a good way to donate organs.  Like those campaigns to get drivers to watch for motorcycles.  Drivers who can't be bothered to watch for other cars.

When you get any license you should become an organ donor. That's why being presented with the choice is part of the licensing process in most states.

Well, years ago I used to work on a research project about an age related Human disease, and we got pretty much all of our normal young "control" tissue from motorcycle accidents.  We would sent a resident up to the OR to collect it after they died.

This is what a totalled Ducati looks like. I went right over the bars; *part* of my anatomy removed the mirror as I sailed over. No injuries aside from the totalled Duc and a scrote of many colors for a couple weeks. Wear your helmets. The levis stood up to another 4 years of use.
