I made the mistake of going to a Ted Neely revival version of JC Superstar in the 90s.  God dam born again hypocrites actually altered the script and songs so that it was more 'christian' for them.  They cut out verses from Superstar that questioned christ and farking gave him a farking resurrection at the end.  Had a white Judas that still tried to sound black.

And on top of that bullshiat Neely was so voice fried that he couldn't even do one high note in the entire show.

At least the tickets were cheap.

I've never seen a stage production, by I always thought Carl Anderson as Judas was just because he was so farking good. Being black was incidental, not making a point.

My vote is for Miguel Fernandez

/not surprised Sebastian Bach sucks
//it's fun watching them gear up to deliver that note

Gillan, hands down. Not even a question. In fact, the original album (Gillan, Head, Elliman) beats all comers in every way.

I switched it off after Sebastian Bach. Godawful.

I've never seen any version of this and I'd prefer to remain painfully ignorant, thank you very much.

Neely is #2. His G5 on Gethsemane is clear and clean and astonishing.

John Legend's is the worst. Dude didn't even try (they should have cast the guy that played Judas but NBC would have passed without a big star in the lead)

I guess I just can't get over how good Carl Anderson was in it.  I just cannot hear any other voice doing it.

I agree. He's my favorite Judas - you can feel the anger from him every time he's on screen and he does have a great voice.

I'm just pointing out that the original guy was a pasty white, slightly effeminate English dude.

Heh, true, especially given Webber and crew were ALL pasty white, slightly effeminate English dudes.

Sorry to hear that.

Production I saw in the 90s had Carl Anderson as well as Ted Neely. It had the resurrection ending, which I thought worked,, but no lyrics were changed. Neely looked like he hadn't aged a day. Carl Anderson was clean shaven and had dreds which made look almost like a different person, but the moment he started "Heaven on Their Minds", it was clearly him.

It was awesome.

I was in North Dakota at the time, and it was late 90's, but it didn't have Carl Anderson by the time it got to us, if the tour I saw had him at all.  Maybe they just altered it for the bible belt, dont't know for sure, just found it really disappointing that they were pandering to the christian groups that were shilling it.  But Neely was defiantly looking and sounding exhausted.

I thought the original ending did have a resurrection: The camera pulls back and shows Neeley watching the bus drive away.

These. BVD stole the farking show. But as for Gethsemane itself, Ted's version is so ingrained into my head that Ian's version throws me all off. Though it has grown on me, mind you.

Another reason why the original album rules: Mike d'Abo's King Herod's Song is the best.

Clearest, cleanest? Neeley.
Most powerful, emotional? Gillan.

The original album was a favorite in my house when I was a kid, we wore out a copy of it and had to buy a new one. Great singing, the playing was excellent by the terrific London session players (I used it when I was learning to play bass) and the booklet was cool.

Only saw it live once, it was a good production. Didn't really like the music part of the John Legend version, those are not R&B/soul songs.

Tell me what you think about your friends at the top
Who'd you think besides yourself's the pick of the crop?
Buddha, was he where it's at? Is he where you are?
Could Mohammed move a mountain, or was that just PR?
Did you mean to die like that? Was that a mistake, or
Did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?
Don't you get me wrong
I only want to know

Love it. I know that Tim Rice gets mocked for rhyming "mistake or" with "breaker" but still.

This.  Gillan's time in Deep Purple almost makes him a ringer for this contest but Neely's no slouch. Always surprises me a bit when that note comes howling out of that slight frame.
/Bon Scott would have made an excellent Pilate.

Every production should just have their Herod lip synch to Alice Cooper's version.

He's a poor singer but I really like the late Rik Mayall's Herod (it's really the only thing that the 2000 film has going for it). He's like a vicious Noel Coward
