Skipping ahead, don't let your dog anywhere near the mayor, especially if it's friendly.

Killing a raccoon with a shovel is a perfectly legitimate way to kill them.   I can't discharge a firearm within city limits, so I use a rake.

He has a valid point.  They're known carriers of rabies and if one came running up to me during the day - or night, for that matter - I'd probably do the same.

In other news, don't feed wild animals like trash pandas.  Anyone who was near Hugh Birch State Park in Fort Lauderdale at night, before they 'relocated' the hundreds of raccoons that would swarms the sidewalk when a human would walk by, understands.  https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-2000-07-24-0007240126-story.html

In grad school I lived in an apartment and this raccoon would come through my back patio on a regular basis.  I suspect on the way to the apartment complex dumpster.

It was big, nasty looking, and really didn't give a fark if any humans showed up.  It just turned its head at you and did a scowl (or quiet bark at you) if you tried to go outside when it was coming through the yard.  I was more scared of it than it was of me - I'm sure of it.  Trash panda is a good term for it.

Mother raccoons are often out and about during daylight hours this time of year because they need to feed their young.  Why the hell couldn't he get in his truck and leave it alone?

I have a cat door, and last week I found a raccoon inside chowing down on the cat's food.  I shooed it away and it left the same way it got in, and then I closed the cat flap.

My ex-girlfriend's parents would feed raccoons in their backyard....even though they had two cats.  Granted, they were indoor cats, but they were making things riskier if one of the cats ever got outside.

I had a raccoon try and get in my house Monday night. My wife puts food out for the animals so we've got a lot of wildlife that stops by our yard raccoons included. This fella climbed up the side of the house, got on the balcony off our bedroom, and tried to claw through the screen. When I tried to run it off it showed no fear at all. I closed the glass door but it came back a couple of times that night.

With the warm weather here there's no way I'm keeping all the windows closed over a raccoon. The wife's no longer putting food out and if the little bastard tries to get in again he's going to be treated to a couple of rounds to the rump from my paintball gun as a warning. Failing that I'll have him removed by a wildlife service but typically small animals like raccoons and squirrels don't survive relocation so this is his chance to learn some boundaries.

most likely rabid.  i've done the same.  in stead of it being my wife, it was my 3 year old son and instead of a shovel, it was a bat.  batter up.

Racoons a mean little mf-ers.  They're not nice, and they're not pets.  And if one is coming at you, unafraid of humans, a shovel is probably a good idea.  (.22 between the eyes is a better one)

Even a small raccoon can and will take out a good sized dog pretty handily.  I get the whole 'habitat' argument, and largely agree that we are destroying the creatures' habitat.  But if a raccoon is coming at you, yeah...shovel, rake, 5 lb cross-pien hammer, whatever it takes.  'Coons are mean buzzards, and are a danger to humans, pets, as well as to property.  I've known a couple of my friends who have tried to keep raccoons, squirrels, and other types of 'cute' wildlife as pets...it has never ended well.

Sorry city-kids...these are not 'cute and cuddly w'iw pets'.  They view humans as soft-bellied food providers who should be maimed as soon as they stop being useful.

I have no problem with this.

We have raccoons, opossums and skunks in my suburban backyard.  Raccoons are the most aggressive.  Ever seen a still-living opossum that has had half its face eaten off by a raccoon?  I hope you don't have to.  It also ate the skunk babies while momma was out.

ALSO, look up raccoon roundworm, it's the stuff if nightmares.  Millions of airborne eggs that you could inhale, which could then migrate to your brain and hatch.  Everyone will think you went crazy then eventually died of a stroke.

It doesn't have to be the size of a tiger to give you serious health problems.

Wow... I have known this man personally for years and was just on the phone with his secretary a few minutes ago about a permit for a sign in Atmore...

As far as my dealings with him, he has always seemed like a decent, laid back individual. I can hardly see him doing something like this out of maliciousness, so I fully believe that he thought something was wrong with the raccoon and threatened by it... also, there was just a report about a lady being bitten by a rabid raccoon in our area just a few weeks ago.

I can't imagine how it feels to have a relaxed weekend boating trip turned into a nationwide news event by a psycho woman and her potty-mouthed kid...

Are raccoons native to the Chicago area or did people bring them in? Just wondering who took over what from whom.

Maybe, but I saw my dog make short work of a raccoon - not the same one that was eating the cat's food.
It was early in the morning - still dark - and my dog took off.  I heard a ruckus, and she came back with a dead raccoon (and some scratches on her belly.)

Look, I'm an animal lover who goes out of their way to keep from harming them whenever I can help it. I even feel a pang of guilt when I have to squish widow spiders in my house. Having said that, I really can't fault the guy if his account is accurate.

Shovel is acceptable.   Racoon has a fighting chance.  Rambo knife also acceptable.   Capturing in a trap and placing trap underwater is not acceptable.

2019-06-06 01:00:59 PM
It says right in TFA article that the people upset are the locals who fed the damned thing and claimed it was "friendly". Apparently they don't realize a raccoon acclimated to think humans are a food source can go from friendly to nasty in a heartbeat if the human doesn't make with the food fast enough.

The idiots who fed him got him killed. Simple as that.
