Actually by all contemporary accounts Nero performed admirably during the fire. It was the rest of his administration that sucked.

Nero gets a lot of shiat for that fiddling

He was doing it out of respect, an ode to the city

What else did you expect him to do? Get in a phone booth and take off his suit to be in his Superman tights?

I bet Nero did a better job. He probably didn't randomly hit fortissimo notes and play off key half the time, like Trump does with the English language.

When Trump dies and takes his rightful place in the 8th Circle of Hell, along with his fellow Deceivers, he will still be claiming he made it to the 9th.

It's always been conservatism versus liberty, equality, progress, and democracy.

Conservatism is unAmerican.

Trump spends more time on Twitter than He does attempting to run this country .. He would be lost if He could not have access to his social media .. He's been using it to spread his bullshiat for many years..

Meanwhile, Pelosi is telling fellow Democrats to calm down and not talk about impeachment because she expects that the people who are breaking all the rules will eventually cooperate and play by the rules.

Its sad that democrats are the only alternative to the GOPs complete insanity. I will vote democratic for as long as republicans ignore decency, legality and common sense but christ, I wish democrats could learn from their inaction without helping further the insanity we already face.

He was doing it (if it really happened, which is very doubtful) because he wanted to show off. He was like Piggy in a certain sense, except that he actually worked at his musical talent and was pretty good. But he had to win every competition, always.

But I doubt the guy who built himself a square-mile villa in the heart of Rome and bumped off his mother showed anyone respect.

You dont think he has met the threshold for impeachment? You know the fastest way to get all the information they need would be an impeachment hearing, right?

Fark pelosi, she too damn old for this job.

FTA "He is our nation's Augustus Caesar, the killer of a republic and the herald of a corrupt and collapsing empire."

The fark he is. Augustus was smart, shrewd, actually rich, and his policies were designed to benefit the state. The republic was already gone in all but name by the time he grabbed power.

Trump is more like a shiattier, dumber, dark side version of Gaius Gracchus.

I think the general pattern is indeed similar for similar reasons.

I think the analogy immediately breaks down into nonsense that isn't worth discussing when people start trying to draw parallels down to individual people.

The analogy doesn't go that far down. History repeats in general, not in detail.

He's Augustus Caesar's older, fatter, more senile, balding, lazy, incompetent, mushroom-dicked cousin.

The Dunning-Krugeresque derp over whether to impeach does remind me of the Franken Debacle.

You were wrong there too. :)

Yeah, who needs checks and balances, the rule of law, and equality under the law....the economy is good and the trains run on time!!!

/and conservatives wonder why they remind so many who have studied history, of old school authoritarians

Check out Mike Duncan's "The Storm Before the Storm: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic"

It covers the time period that set the stage for the fall, around 150 - 80 BCE, which is where I think we're at now.

Erosion of political norms, self interested politicians, abandonment of civic duty, hyper partisanship, vast economic inequality, non-citizens seeking a political voice. You obviously can't make a one to one comparison between a modern state and an ancient one, but the parallels are there.
