Sorry, kids: If you want free college you don't get a say in, well, anything.

Why won't those damned college students just listen politely to white supremacists and acknowledge that they have valuable points of view that are worth engaging with and accepting.

My university had professors like Carolyn Porco, and not a bunch of right wing dickbags. And we were a public university in Arizona, FFS. I miss the 90s.

And I was a Mormon Republican back then. I respected the hell out of most of my professors, though, because they knew their field.

Based on what I've seen, it would seem the schools should start teaching these emotionally deranged "activists" what the words they screech such as fascist, racist, rapist, and Nazi actually mean....
101:
- denigrating culture and behavior is not racism.
- consensual sexual activity you regret or felt "emotionally pressured" into is not rape.
That would be a good start.

WastrelWay: I do not understand how the liberal values I cherish have been perverted into censorship. "I do not agree with a word you say, but I defend your right to say it."

Yep.

Used to be a time the liberal college kids would defend free speech, work against censorship and book banning, and welcome open debate from all comers while trying to fight off the conservatives who wanted to censor what you thought, said, and did if it didn't fall lockstep in line with their beliefs, and ban the books and people they don't like.

Now, the "liberal" college kids want to censor what you think, say, and do if it doesn't fall lockstep in line with their beliefs, and ban the books and people they don't like.

/and the conservatives just flat out became Nazis.

Benevolent Misanthrope: I really miss the days of, "If you disagree with your professor, debate them.  If you win, great.  If not, STFU until you know what you're talking about."

Gone are the days when liberal colleges were at the forefront of defending the first amendment.  Berkley was key to that in the 1960's and now anyone who dares speak something that is not going with the accepted speak causes riots at Berkley.  You can be wearing a yarmulke and be called a Nazi at Berkley for f's sake.

Heck, the ACLU no longer defends free speech.  As a Libertarian I see a huge problem here.  I do not know what the causes of this situation are (I can take guesses), but if I were a youngster I would have serious second thoughts about going to college due to them being so close-minded, not teaching anything practical (unless you major in engineering or the like), and it being fantastically expensive.

Gubbo: Why won't those damned college students just listen politely to white supremacists and acknowledge that they have valuable points of view that are worth engaging with and accepting.

You might have a slight point if more than maybe one or two of the speakers subjected to this treatment were actually white supremacists.

Beyond that, if they don't want to hear what the person has to say, they're free to leave and leave the people who do want to listen.

I'm old, but not THAT old, and I can remember right-wingers calling for professors and high school teachers to be fired for being Commies, though these days they seem to prefer "Cultural Marxists" as their accusation, and if you remember the John Birch Society, the Koch Bros' dad was a founding member.

Enigmamf: Is this the "If you don't allow Nazis to use taxpayer-funded facilities, you're literally a Nazi" thread again?

You would have a partial point if any of the people subjected to this censorship/heckler's veto were actually Nazis, but they weren't, so do you don't.

Beyond that, if the facility is taxpayer funded and the organizers of the speaking event follow the rules to reserving the venue, they have a right go there and hear the speaker speak.

We're dealing with people who want college staff, campus police officers, etc. censured or fired for liking political posts on social media or supporting certain politicians, etc.

Sorry, not sorry, but college personnel have a right to like a post or tweet by Donald Trump, the GOP, a celebrity, a comedian, the NRA, etc., even if you disagree with the content of the post or the person making the post.

These people are fre to spout whatever they believe, even if they don't work there.  So how is that censorship.

Would me getting fired for saying the Jews control the world and should be overthrown while at my office l, thereby getting me fired be stifling of free speech?

No, not really.

And it's both sides doing this as someone else has already pointed out in multiple posts upthread.

Its important for minority and LGBTQ students to know which teachers at their school are right wing dickbags, and to publicly voice their opposition to them, and to use administrative and legal means to remove these people from their positions, because right wing dickbaggery directly threatens the lives of minorities and LGBTQ.

Colleges should be a place where you learn to practice reasoned discourse, approach issues with logic and facts, and act as a community of varying ideas. Acting as censorious dickheads with all the alleged answers will not serve you well in the real work world unless you work for a SJW nonprofit.

In their minds it means anyone who doesn't match their own level of racial ideological purity.  These purity tests, of course, don't have anything to do with any real social or political agenda.  It's just crap they spout to get more Snapbook Likes - the defacto new heroin of the Millennial generation.

Ultimately they aren't really fighting anything except each other, because outing a fellow faction member as being ideologically impure is the easiest way to remove rivals on their way to the top of Popularity Mountain, where the skies are made from Patreon checks and free sex pours from endless rivers of followers.

It's a cult, and everyone wants to be its leader.  All this noise aimed at outsiders is just that - noise.  In the end all that really matters is that their own side got to see them beat their chests and wave their dicks in the direction of "the enemy."

Welcome to the face of the Alt-Left.  If it looks a lot like the Alt-Right, well, it's probably because they do the same thing, too.

Because we've allowed leftists to flatter themselves as liberals.  Stop using the terms interchangeably and you can begin to address the problem.

Yup. When Jewish guys, black women and British gay fellas who like black dudes are labeled "white supremacists," you know the term doesn't mean what it once did.

IHadMeAVision: As it seems to me, expensive schools with lots of artsy fartsy types have more of these problems than cheap public schools. Offer void in California.

I'd guess that you're not reading stories from cheap public schools like U Wyoming, UNL, U Illinois, or even some pricier private schools in flyover country like Creighton etc.  They're out there, but you're not seeing them in your local media.

2019-04-23 3:01:19 AM
If you don't agree with someone's belief, then debate with them, use logic to point out their flaws. Silencing or censoring people is never the answer. It's like a bullet wound. You don't fix it by simply covering the hole with a band-aid. You need to disinfect it, remove the bullet, and close the wound properly and allow it to heal. Easy fixes like band-aids will always fail to solve the root of the problem.

And free speech is free speech for all, even if it offends you.

Bears repeating:

1. The response to offensive free speech should be more free speech, not censorship.

2. If you don't defend the free speech of someone whose speech you find loathsome, you don't really believe in free speech.
