Wow... Providence Equity sold their 10% stake for $200mm... only missed out on a billion. Ouch.

never trust tech companies going public for obscene amounts. There's a lot of money laundering going on. Part of the reason Facebook does what they do was the massive influx of Russian money back in the early 2010s. One of the things that never sat right was the stupidly high oculus buyout

I wouldn't pay $5 a month for HULU.

Put '15 bullion' into Google and found a property for sale in New Jersey, while hoping for a pic of 15 bullion cubes. Goggle's full of beer.

We use Hulu a lot more than Netflix.  Well worth the $5 a month in my opinion.

When AT&T, Disney, and other companies come out with their own streaming services, there will be too many players in the space with none of them having content worth the price.   I am not sure what to do when that time comes.  I imagine we will have an annoying rotating schedule where we buy Netflix in January, Hulu in February, Disney in March, HBO in April, etc.

If you would figure that out and advise me I'd pay YOU $5 a month. I need movies and sports.

Something is worth whatever someone will pay for it.

Sports is a no go.  I couldn't find a way to keep sports without paying as much or more than a bundle with cable.  Luckily the Orioles are terrible, so we don't have to worry about baseball this year.  When the football season starts, there are only 16 games and we are going to watch the ones we can't miss from a bar.  We also have a small antenna for over the air broadcasts, but it isn't reliable.

AT&T is coming out with *another* streaming service? What happened to DirectTV-Now?

Or is this one just going to be a "lite" version that only has Warner content on it (which AT&T owns)?

They were originally going to add Warner content to HBO NOW because they own that too.  That would be great, but now they have talked about multiple tiers and multiple providers.   I have no idea what that company is thinking.

The best streaming service for me is going to turn out to be DVD.com.
All the other ones have one or two signature shows, and the rest is dreck.
Other than HBO, I don't watch shows the day they air/drop, so I'm fine binging DVDs and watching Blu-rays 6 months later.
Free YouTube content entertains me the most -- even with ads (that can be skipped or blocked).

This.

Only time I paid for Hulu was when I was catching up on the TV show Castle.

Yup. Same here. Netflix, side loaded firestick, roku, ota antenna.  BUT suddenstink, my cable provider, wants to charge as much for unlimited data stand alone as they do for the whole goddamn package with a phone line. So, I bought a cheap phone and had them install the landline, but made them give me tivo. Canceled Amazon prime because when i was still a stay at home dad that shiat was dangerous. Plus, they didn't have any really good movies. May reactivate in the fall, or just wait til new year. The whole goddamn lint was to save money, but I'm still paying ~$130/mo with everything.

I pay $37 for Comcast 60Mb, $6 for Hulu, $12 for Netflix, and $15 for HBO.  So I am at $70 per month.  The problem is Comcast will jack the price up to $79 for the same package next year.  That will be $112 which is only $18 less than the bundle that included local sports.  So next year, I will have to switch to FIOS for $39.99 a month and then switch back to Comcast the year after.  I bought my own routers/modems for both so I don't have to drop off any equipment.  It still sucks to go through the phone call BS each year so I can get the "new customer" rate.

I feel sorry for people like my dad who are stuck in an area that is a virtual monopoly.  He has DSL because he wasn't paying what Comcast wanted.  His DSL costs more than my current Comcast does. :(

Depends on what you want to watch.  It's a good TV substitute, you just sort of live a season behind.  Compared to what it costs to get most of that on a cable package, it's a pretty good deal.

I hate the way they do that shiat. They offer amazing deals for new customers and screw the living shiat out of people that have been with them for years. Right now I have spectrum internet, amazon prime with hbo, and netflix. It's not perfect but it beats paying ridiculous prices for 2000 channels of complete garbage I never watched in the first place.

Yeah, we have one provider, or you can get satellite internet, so I'm stuck paying 80 bucks a month for 100Mb top speed.

Only if you're a cheap bastard and subscribe at $6 per month instead of the $12/month plan, which has ZERO ads.

Hulu is an insanely good deal. Every single episode of King of the Hill, Seinfeld, Top Chef, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Broad City, Key & Peele? Originals like The Handmaid's Tale, 11.22.63, and documentaries? Current season of SNL, edited down and ad-free? Select episodes of Jeopardy! and Chopped?

It's the price of a goddamn meal at McDonald's and people find a way to complain about it...

Switching to Hulu live right after GoT which just so happens to be when my FIOS contract is done. I hope they bundle Hulu Live with Disney+ and ESPN+. It will still be cheaper than what I'm paying now.

Preach on. Been doing Hulu/Netflix for almost 10 years now... Amazon Prime for an occasional series I want to buy (Gold Rush, etc) plus, I just started Bosch and I really like that and some of their other Original stuff.

Though I must say, I have not missed sports in a few years, but lately I have been. Might be time to do ESPN+ or something...

We finally have a-la-carte that we've been dreaming of since we were kids. I'll take what I can get.

I catch the Thursday night NFL prime games on Amazon. That's the extent of sports watching I do during the year, but it does help scratch that itch.

They tried to sell Hulu a long while back - no takers. No one was dumb enough to buy a streaming service from its content makers - which would leave them eternally negotiating for content after purchasing the service. So, while it's not worth zero, I think it's worth significantly less than $15 Billion.
Disney is launching its own streaming service at a similar price point to Hulu (which it now owns 60% of). They'll have to decide what content to put on either or both services.
I have no idea why Disney decided to buy out ATT or why Comcast let them. Disney now has majority share and that gives them complete control of Hulu. Maybe they aren't confident in the new Disney streaming launch.
