It stands to reason that if you suck at the job bad enough that even your own party runs against you, you're going down.

Best thing would be for no one else to jump in and for Weld to keep running ads like the one on his page.
Make Trump attack him and don't respond.

That is a lesson for the Dems in the general as well.

"Weld was governor of the Bay State from 1991 to 1997, and was the Libertarian Party's vice-presidential nominee in 2016, sharing a ticket with former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson."

Yeah this totally will get traction.

I think the real reason it won't get traction is because of all the changes the RNC has made to limit the possibility of anyone other than Trump being on the primary ballot.

Well yeah, they had to spend 75% of the election cycle running against their own party instead of against the other side.  Unfortunately, I don't think this is a serious challenge.

A couple things to consider.
He will be all over Iowa and new Hampshire for the next year and a half.
He will likely run a Beto style campaign.
He will pull from three groups; libertarian Republicans, Republicans tired of defending Trump, and Republicans who are worried Trump won't win.

That might not be enough to get Weld the nomination, but there will be damage to Trump's base.

Also, anyone supporting Weld will be attacked by Trumpers making them reluctant to go back to Trump if Weld loses the nomination.

Trump barely won 2016 and is still unpopular and will likely keep imploding.

So no, Weld probably won't get the nomination, but it's one more thing to pull voters from Trump, many of whom won't go back.

If anyone decided to run against Trump in the primaries some people showing open support for the other candidate will be murdered. Trump has brought us fascism complete with the violence that comes with it.

abb3w: Ask Lichtman for an official ruling, but that looks like Key 2 may have just turned.

Key two only turns if the challenger takes a third or more of the vote on the first ballot at the convention.

If I had to predict based on my reading of the keys at this point, I'd say Trump is going to win, and with a majority of the popular vote this time. Conservatives are downright giddy about Trump, the hemming and hawing of the pundit class notwithstanding. And for all the Democratic candidates, not one appears to be charismatic or a national hero of the caliber of FDR or Eisenhower.

And the Barr synopsis of the Mueller report, and the redacted version he will release soon, will probably turn the scandal key irrevocably in Trump's favor. The public seems to have bought the MSM spin that "collusion" is the only issue concerning Trump; not whether he's being blackmailed, or whether he's committed multiple felonies in trying to cover his ass.

2016 allowed me to retain my confidence in democratic government because democracy worked while the elite buffer against democracy catastrophically backfired. Trump winning a majority of voters will certainly test that confidence.

We'll see.

Are we sure about that?  We've seen folks like Graham and Cruz craw back to Trumpers with their tail between their legs.

Sorry to see Bill go for the Republican ticket.  Then again, I was hoping the Libertarian ticket in 2016 would have been Weld/Johnson instead of the other way around though.

Virginia has open primaries too, and I expect to vote for the most unelectable Democrat on the ballot.  So it all works out even.

Too bad Trump has cowed the entire party, otherwise I'd expect an actual challenge to a president with historically low approval ratings.

I wonder if it matters how much traction he'd get If the media gives Weld a lot of attention.  One could argue Trump got
To where he is due to the media exposure, if the channels constantly
