I have actually met and worked with a Uighur refugee here in the US, a very nice person who spoke better English than I do. What the Chinese government is doing to them brings to mind the forced assimilation of Native Americans.

/Uighur is pronounced whee-gur, as best as I could hear it.

Actually, we ARE that far behind. The kind of surveillance state China has created is at least 10-15 years more advanced than anything the US or UK has cooked up.

They've got their great firewall internet censorship apparatus, their social credit system which rewards good Communist Party stooges and punishes dissidents, actual re-education camps, plus surveillance capabilities that Orwell could only have dreamed about.

Put all that stuff together and you have a ruthless state machine that can suppress and uproot opposing views before they can spread.

The West has done shiatty things, but our system of checks and balances is so far holding up. How much longer those checks will function properly is the real question...

You're apparently not familiar with the fact that we're locking children in cages, and pretty much all of them are the same minority. A few of them have died from neglect, and many of them have been abused, including things like forced injections of tranquilizers. We also have a special police force (ICE) assigned to do pretty much nothing but monitor this population (and no, that is NOT the same as a normal border patrol, we have one of those too), and they frequently target others of this minority who fail to produce papers, citizen or not. Thankfully, we haven't put citizens in re-education camps, but if people find ripping children from their parents and throwing them in cages morally acceptable, we aren't far from that point - in some ways we're already past it.

The US has never been perfect, but there was a time when we could at least claim the moral high ground on human rights abuses. W weakened that with Gitmo, Trump hurled it into the dumpster fire.

They're doing everything they can to stack the courts so they break. I don't think a single term of Trump is going to cause a collapse, especially with the House flipped, but we start redlining on 2, another Republican continuing his legacy before we can turn things majorly around and we're probably done as a nation.

That said, it looks like enough people are waking up and voting, so this is PROBABLY just going to be Nixon V 2.0. We desperately need a good administration after this though.

The Chinese state is crawling so far up its citizen's asses that it's coming out the top of their necks?  Where their face is.  Because the neck is like a face pole.  And the government is...oh...forget it.  The funny part of that got blocked by a Chinese firewall.

In very rare cases, kids got separated because they couldn't find a parent, or had very good reason to believe they were being trafficked, and they therefore pulled them away from those who were exploiting them. In all other cases, the families were kept together, and even in those cases, they weren't using cages. This is very different from systemically separating them as a standard policy, which is what Trump is doing.

And the kids that died from neglect, you can blame their parents for that.

When someone dies over several days of incarceration from a treatable infection that responds to antibiotics, then no, the only ones at fault are the ones running the prison. Those drugs don't take anywhere near that long to save someone.

In a federal detention center.
While Obama was president.
Go ahead and try to whitewash it all you want. It still happened.
