Tax day for me was so long ago that I've forgotten about it.
I already got and spent my refunds...

Who are these people that wait until today to finally file?

Actually, I know that...  I did that once.  The one time that I owed rather than getting a refund.  That time I waited....  So are all the people filing today the ones that owe?

Nah, plenty of people procrastinate, it's human nature. Heck, I've had coworkers in the past that had to file an extension even though they were expecting a refund (though in one case it was because their taxes were complicated by a number of one-off scenarios and their accountant wanted more time to fully research everything).

I owed, I filed this morning. Didn't wait to actually do them until today though.

People who must deal with Fidelity (motto: your third 1099 might be right), BB&T (motto: Losing your paperwork since 1872), or Computershare (motto: We automatically request a two month paperwork extension. Don't you?) don't have any chance to do it earlier.

I find your logic faulty.

If you want to maximize interest and utilization of your money, you should set things up to avoid any refund at all. So it isn't logical to point and mock those who put off filing a couple months. You are as guilty of taking your money late as they are, no?

Then of course you've got the people who know they suck at saving and use their refund as an opportunity to get a large sum they otherwise couldn't scrape together. Given that behavior, they might know they are better off waiting until April to file so they have the money at their planned vacation or whatever. I'll certainly say that their bad money skills are bad, but I'll still credit them for working within their own perceived limitations. We all do that in some ways. It isn't unlike how I don't buy sweets, Doritos, Cajun trail mix, etc. I know I lack the self control not to scarf them down throughout the week, but I do have the self control in the moment of shopping.

I thought you didn't even have to file an extension if you were getting a refund. Aren't late penalties merely a percentage of what you owe?

Speaking from my own personal experience, I have filed late and was never penalized. Got a refund. They are happy to wait til the very last minute to get you your refund.

I had to send a check for $4K+ thanks to the "Screw the Poors Tax Cuts and Jerbs Act". I figured I'd wait as long as possible before contributing money destined to line Trump's personal pockets.

I knew what was going to happen.

I did my mom and dad's taxes 5 ways from Sunday. I did itemized deductions, and standard deduction... still came out with the same numbers every time -- She's going to be paying just under $200 a month for the next year. I told my mom, "Maybe I'm missing something. Have Allen check them."

Allen is a CPA and he came out with the exact same numbers. My mom's withholding wasn't nearly enough for the year. She's NEVER come up short on tax day. There was always enough for a refund. And Allen did my mom's taxes for free because she used to babysit him and his younger siblings when they lived next door and Allen's mom was working 2 jobs just to make ends meet. I hate that my mom had to ask Allen to look over my numbers, because I was second-guessing myself. I know how to do taxes. Hell, I did taxes for strippers in east Phoenix. I KNOW how taxes work and how not to get red-flagged.

My mom is stressed out because her tax liability hasn't changed, but her withholding did. Right now, mom is making money under a provisional W4 form. But that's going to change, too.

For years, we peons saw tax season as a forced savings plan. I actually liked it. BOOM! $1100 for a new MacBook. Those days are gone. The Republicans want you to feel the pinch when it's time to pay taxes, so they can appropriate those funds when you're not looking. Hell, even Reagan understood sleight of hand. Now you're getting f*cked on April 15, and you don't even know whose dick is in your ass.

"lower 49"?  There are 7 states that have land farther north than Maine's northernmost point.

The roommate came home and decided today was the day to do hers as I was leaving. I've had mine done since mid Feb and still hate the tax "cut".

Let's see, if we're lucky, and we go to the right store/restaurant at the right time, we get something worth < $10.

I'm sure Sen. Mitch McConnel and his wife, worth over $355M, wouldn't bother with that much loose change in their couch, compared to the tax cut he gave them.

If you're HS or College student working a part time one w-2 job, getting the refund ASAP was always nice. Now that you are older, it's one big f*cked up math problem that blows your mind way more than when they first added letters to math and then science classes became math classes....then they combined those....then they added what letters and numbers are in this image to make sure you're not a robot.... every April 15th, it's one big f*cked up word, math, science, psych eval and robot apocalypse problem in one...no wonder people drink, smoke, and want weed legal...."Oh, wait....you found someone you love, someone you want to be with the rest of your life, someone you may want to raise a family with?....well, here are some new forms to fill out. You may want to start over and check your work, because all of those options have added a new realm of tax laws depending on many factors that I don't have time to go through with you right now depending on...blah...blah...it's all right here in this booklet and you could be penalized if you don't...well...It's all there..just initial here, here, here, here..AND, sign. All right good. So, would you like to sign up for our VIP membership plan? It will only take a moment of your time, and you get a coupon for 10% off at Blockbuster!"

Did you miss that if you file a 1040, a lot of the items that used to be on the 1040 are now on COMPLETELY NEW FORMS, SCHEDULES 1-6?

If they owe you money they'll hold it in an account for up to 3 or 5 years, I cant remember, and it will gain interest. Which is nice, but don't do it the other way around.

I always file an extension (or my CPA does) and don't have to pay a penalty. I think you get to October 15. But I have always thought that if you are getting a refund, no big deal...but if you owe...the IRS expects payment by 4-15 even if you're filing an extension. Which, either way, the paperwork must have been done so why not file? Is there a CPA around?
