Just throw it over your shoulder before you jump so you don't step on it.

Whatever they do, I hope they continue the writing ala Discovery where each week has only the thinnest of plot broken up by lots melodrama between ship mates while the over arching story drags out episode after episode until it's unsatisfying conclusion thuds to an end.

What Riker's beard might look like...

Bith Set Me Up: TOS is the only Trek show that started out strong. The others didn't get good till their third seasons.

I mean... fair enough (though I'd argue more like second season, typically) but the problem Discovery has is that it's not actually on TV or even on a streaming service people would normally have otherwise.  It's doing the equivalent of trying to get customers to follow it solely by buying the DVDs, and every DVD only has like 3 episodes on it.  Without a strong start it's kind of farked in a way that the other series really weren't.

Like... compare that to TOS, which basically failed outright and wasn't watched by farking anybody whatsoever until it was already over, and put into syndication to try to recover the losses.  It literally only ever got an audience in the first place because it was easy to find, easy to stumble into, and cost nothing... and when that wasn't the case no one saw it.

There's a reason people aren't accepting "it'll probably get better eventually" as an excuse for Discovery, and I say that as one of the people who actually thought it was fine even in the first half of season 1.  "If you just shovel a hundred and twenty more bucks into it eventually one or two episodes will probably be really good" is not really how media has been consumed... ever.  Like, the only medium to ever manage that even briefly has been video games over the last decade-ish, and even that has kind of worn out its welcome and appears to be making that industry teeter on the edge of complete collapse.

He directed the last episode of The Orville, AND Marina Sirtis was on the episode as the ship's schoolteacher.

/The Orville is Star Trek now.
//Discovery is Viacom Trek.
///The Abrams movies are "We didn't really watch Star Trek" Trek.

I thought Discovery started off pretty ok and has only improved.  The first season's ending was a bit weak, but wow did they come back strong.  We finally get to see Captain Pike's character fleshed out, and this last episode where we finally see inside the new Enterprise...damn, I think I made a puddle.

I kinda like Discovery, but I wish it could get away from Michael Burnham being the specialest woman in the galaxy. She started a war! She ended a war! The cosmic event is about her brother! It's also actually her mom! She's the one who figures it out! Only SHE can do the hero thing! Because REASONS!

I hate the "Mary Sue" accusations that flow so freely with popular fiction these days, but Michael Burnham really flirts with it. In many ways she matches the actual original definition of the term: A new character that gets inserted into the TOS time period on the Enterprise (and other important ships), has a special previously-unmentioned relationship with the TOS main characters, and has numerous special skills and unique status that makes her the key to saving the day over and over because literally nobody else can do it. If she were banging McCoy, Kirk, Sulu, Chekov, or Scotty she'd check all the boxes.

Give them time. They'll cast a young Kirk or McCoy or somebody, and she'll have a torrid affair with them. Just you watch. Or maybe she'll start banging Pike... I haven't watched since the second episode this season (and have no plans to start up again) so maybe she already did that.

She's Frodo, basically, but with smaller feet and bigger stones.

FYI, the origin of "Mary Sue":

A story written by Paula Smith was published in 1973. The story was titled "A Trekkers Tale." and it featured a character named Lt. Mary Sue. This story, written as a piece of satire, mocked the genre of stories that had sprung up featuring female characters that were personally involved with Kirk, Spock, Bones, or Sulu. Characters that could and did save the day when the show's established heroes could not.

She is annoyingly close to that line.  Although she is female so I would expect a young Kirk to bang/try to bang her no matter how well written her character is.  It's half the reason he exists after all.

This.

Burnham is fast becoming the worst part of the show.

Becoming? I've been enjoying season two precisely because it's less Burnham focused. There are other characters on that ship with stories I'm interested in and I'm glad to be able to see them this season instead of everything being filtered through Burnham as in the first season.

The only thing DISCO got right was the revamped version of the Enterprise.  At least it doesn't look like a model from the 60's anymore.

Uh, no. The ram audience numbers for Star Trek were not great, and that combined with the expensive nature of the show to get it cancelled. This was just before networks started breaking down ratings numbers by age category - i.e. demographics.

When they did - starting with the season after Trek ended, they quickly discovered young viewers were worth a lot more than old ones. And Star Trek skewed young, making it a very valuable audience. NBC was sitting on a moneymaker and just didn't realize it yet.

Ugh, Discovery. The super hot black girl is a genius and a ninja and a commando all in one. There might be a ship and a crew or something, but who cares about them when youve got superwoman.

Star Trek to me was always largely about the interplay of the crew & the ship, their strengths vs their limitations.. But not Discovery, its all about black Bruce Lee superbrain with tits.

Oh, and for some reason the orcs from LoTR are there in some sort of space castle thing. -shrug-

I'd say it's more that she reeks of it. I'm pretty surprised the concept for her character ever made it out of the writer's room because of how obviously bad it is, like some tween's first fic with their first OC has somehow made it to screen in an actual tv series. Just putting it down on paper you can see how bad it looks. The only thing that could make it more like a joke about peak bad trek writing was if she was also a specific writer's furry self-insert character.

Let me get this straight, you guys want the super hot woman to have less screen time?

The Enterprise set was pure bridge porn.
And the ship looked amazing. Going for a Pike backdoor pilot?

I can dream.

I'm fine with her having screen time. I'm just annoyed that every single plot element just happens to have a personal connection to her. Also, give me more of that Asian bridge dude and Captain DILF.

Maybe there's some legal reasons between Paramount and CBS as to why they can't do it, but I'd love to see a spin off series with Pike and young Spock and the Discovery era Enterprise crew doing a more episodic sci-fi show, like the old Treks. I'd be more excited to see that than an Empress Georgiou/ Section 31 show or a Lower Decks sit-com. They've already spent the money designing and building the sets for the new Enterprise and they look gorgeous. The uniforms are cool too.
