Don't worry, Pepsi, it's just India. The potatoes will be replaced with plastic Easter eggs halfway to market.

Jeezus, I've been thinking about MLB way too much since opening day.

I read that headline a couple times thinking what the hell does that all mean? Are the Pirates or the Indians growing fake potatoes for a drink they are marketing at their stadium as "Pepsi"?

For more than ten thousand or eleven thousand years, the aboriginal peoples of the whole world have saved some of their crop to plant as seed the next year, assuming a famine does not force the poor to eat their seed.

This is right, ordained by the Laws of Nature, Man and God.

fark corporate personas and their "intellectual and trade rights". Man is not made for the Sabbath, said Himslef in red letters in the Christian Scriptures, but the Sabbath is made for Man.

Anything else is heresy, rank, decadent and vile, not to mention Mammonlatrous and Bourgeois.

Thou shalt not take the sitting bird and its eggs.

You monsters, parasites, scavengers of human misery, and predatory classes hiding behind limited liability  joint stock corporations.

Even an atheist has some standards of right and wrong, why don't you Kristians, Jews, Muslims and whores?

Speaking of whores, thou shalt not bring a whore price into the Temple of the Lord. So there!

You can believe me. When us atheists take God's side, we are almost always right to an infinitesimal of accuracy.

meat0918: Patents expire too, but you knew that.

Yeah. I know that. I know that Monsanto's Round Up patent was about to expire, so they did a bit of GMO to make crops withstand 10x as much of the stuff as Nature allowed and put a patent on the seed instead of the biocide to force farmers to buy their proprietary "solution" to the problem of lower profits.

An Alberta farmer used Round Up as farmers often do, to clear a field for planting. He discovered that his crop was immune to two kinds of herbicides, as no doubt were many weeds and pests. This was a practical experiment that showed that GMO genes can transfer naturally from GMO crops to regular crops and even weeds, so that Monsanto can sue your ass off for "stealing" their intellectual property without your knowledge or intent.

Facts. How do those work?

You have no poetry in your soul. No prophecy, no imagination, no light. You should save the drunk hypothesis for people who report UFOs without specifying where they are military, commercial, manufactured, or nature phenomena. The ad hominem argument works better if you have a mob of fools and scoundrels behind you, an individual or a very small group of outsiders in front of your cannons.

And the problem with Mr. Albertan Farmer is he was shown to have knowledge and intent of stealing the patented crop.

It's not right that Monsanto went after him, but until you the law is fixed to ban the prohibition on saving seed, it's what we have.

And now for the graph. It is full of denialist lies and hidden assumptiuons.

The reason for that uptick (let's call it the blade of the hockey stick, shall we?) is the use of artificial fertilizers made from fossil fuels, irrigation made from fossil water (contaminated with salts and heavy metals as most of the deep waters of the Earth are), and mechanization on an industrial scale.

This growth in "productivity" dates back to the industrial Revolution in England, where large deposits of coal made up for the destruction of 99% of British forests, including the colonized oak forests of Ireland, the conifers of Scotland and the hillsides of Wales' coal mines.

Fossil fuels are a finite and easily exhausted resource that can only be replaced with good science, imagination, human effort, intelligence and wisdom.

This is how I respond to your Trumpian hubris. With facts. Not so very generally in your favour as you think.

A fact and logic based refutation is a real refutation. A faith-based claim or fallacy is a false refutation. Lies, denialism, propagand may be "winners" like Donald Trump, but beneath the vanity and the hubris and the ignorance and the whiney little biatchiness, Trump is as hollow as the Bull of Crete, and Melania and the other concubines are Pasiphaë.

Bellow, oh gilded calf, oh Trumpian bourgeois full of bullshiat. Your roaring is merely the flames of Hell. It is pure cannon. It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing!

The "'prohibition on saving seed"? Did you miss my point entirely, that this has been grandfathered into all right law, equity and justice for 2x longer than denialists believe the Earth has existed?

There is no prohibition on saving seed to plant a new crop. It's ancient custom, older than the tribal laws of Europe and the religious laws of India or China.

Now now, Brother Brantgoose. Let me remind you that just as you are what you eat, you are also what you drink. By enjoying that pirate vodak, you have also enjoyed allowing a legally protected strain of potatoes to commingle its patented pattern with your own, and have thereby surrendered your free agency.

Pretty sure.

I'd like to see us change the laws around Plant patents. I feel that lying about the circumstances where people have been sued by companies like Monsanto negatively affects those efforts. It allows people to dismiss our concerns about such laws as hyperbolic nonsense.

I'd also like to see GMO technology used more widely and for things other than making the plants herbicide-resistant. There are a lot of things that we can improve using those techniques that we don't because they don't make some company money.

I really want blight resistant potatoes, which I would have thought would save farmers money because they wouldn't have to spray to control it, but there's a lot of money to be made selling those chemicals.

Still there are some varieties on the horizon, but current sentiment surrounding the technology means they will probably never really get off the ground and into common use.

Oh and Bruscar, I think technically it's the Utility Patent we need to get fixed, because you can save seed under the old plant patent laws. It was only after utility patents were allowed to apply as they are now (if I'm remembering correctly) that Monsanto and the like were allowed to enforce "no saving seed".

The Walt Disney Protection Act provided extension for Mickey Mouse is almost expired isn't it?

I wouldn't be surprised to see someone try and extended copyright yet again here in the next few years.
