I'm gonna guess because a lot of corporations have shifted to a fiscal year that ends on March 31st.

Possible that it has nothing to do with it, though.

Because they needed way more time to deal with everything back before it was all electronic.

My dad always said politicians wanted to keep it as far away from National elections as possible.

Nope, that's not it.

Basically, they needed a date late enough for everybody to get their paperwork in order, and also one that wasn't close to corporate and other tax deadlines.

Because the US Government passed a law saying that Federal Income Tax filings were due by April 15th, unless that day was on a weekend, in which case the Monday after, and that law gives the IRS the power to extend the deadline (either regionally or nationally) if they feel some unusual event has hampered people's ability to file by the deadline.

Now, why they wrote the law that way? That's a different question, but Tax Day is April 15th because the law says so.

For New England, today is Patriot's Day, so they get another day to file.

For those who need to figure out what is and is not New England, here is a lovely map.

I expected the article to explain *why* lawmakers chose April 15.

Silly me.

I always have my taxes finished before Valentines day, at the latest.

It's in the near the end of the 2nd fiscal quarter for the financial year for the government. They are start on 11/1.  Originally, it was even out the workload between quarterly business filings and ex-pat filings, which is later in the year.

Really? I should petition Pennsylvania to do this.

This....is amazingly accurate.

I have now stolen it and will repost in the future with no credit given to you (or whomever it was that created the map in the first place).

To save anyone from clicking a MSN link

Basically, they started with an earlier date (March 1st) with no reason given.

(I figure they decided 2 months after the start of the new year was enough time for accountants).

Then as taxes got more and more complex, they moved it, several times.

// (TFA takes about seven paragraphs to tell you this, and then stuffs a bunch of ads and unrelated content links into your face. MSN is a pile of garbage, the signal to noise ratio is ridiculously low, you're welcome.).

// And as an added bonus, INFINITE scrolling!
