I didn't really  have a problem with Michelle Obama before this.  But she can f*ck off with her 'divorced dad' analogy.

Gender is not determinitive in who is the asshole parent in divorce.  And frankly, in most divorce situations it isn't good v. bad and her comment is the type of ignorant rhetoric that puts dads, and moms in unnecessary stereotype pigeonholes.  And that is not good for post-divorce families.

So, in short, f*ck off Michelle Obama with that shiat.  Compare him to something less offensive to 1/2 of divorced parties out there.

You're aware that Trump is a guy, right?

Calling him a divorced mom wouldn't have made sense.

Speaking to a 15,000-strong crowd in London, Michelle likened the Trump-run country to a troubled teenager.

If you are a divorced dad with a non-troubled teen, then good on you. She wasn't comparing Trump to you.

If you think Trump isn't like lots of asshole divorced dads who create troubled teens to get even with the ex or the world, consider this pic.

People who take offense to Michelle Obama's comments need to examine why that is. I'm a white woman - I don't get offended when people complain about all the white women calling the cops on black people who are merely existing because they're not talking about me.

I'm only pissed because it's not even shocking. This is what women think - that men are bumbling farking morons who are incapable of caring for their kids. fark you, lady. You don't suffer estrangement from your loved ones because of that stereotype, do you? Didn't think so.

This is the stereotyping shiat that makes it impossible for dads to get custody of their kids until the mother does something HORRIBLE.

(You probably don't feel attacked by that because no one has ever tried to falsely name you as a white lady calling the cops. For those of us who have been hurt by this kind of trope supported slander, irresponsibly throwing these analogies around reinforces them as easily assumed truths. This is just to say I know why I take offense to this and it's because it's offensive)

I think what especially bothers me about it is that Michelle Obama is brilliant and I would dare say has rarely, if ever, been caught not choosing her words with utmost care lest it be possible to twist her words, in a lot of ways  BECAUSE she is so scrutinized in ways we don't bother to hold mediocre white men to account, which means she's very likely well aware of what she's saying (as well as what's unspoken but clearly implied in presenting that trope as an easily relatable truth) and intends it to be taken that way.

I'm not trolling. One, I've been here too long, and my posting history is well established. Two, I don't say provocative shiat to get attention. I legitimately think some of the responses in this thread are batshiat goddamn insane. Well, it pisses me off because I'm a divorced father, and it perpetuates bullshiat stereotypes. I mean sure, some dads are clueless about their kids' health. Most aren't.  I'm not going to air personal laundry here, but my ex-wife and I certainly had some arguments about my kids' health where I didn't think *she* was taking things seriously enough.

"Whole lotta MRAs up in this here thread. Smells like barely restrained rage and Axe body spray."

Yes, that was certainly not trolling. You added quite a bit of nuance to the discussion. Thank you for your wise contribution.

These sorts of off-the-cuff statements are reinforcement of stereotypes that are incredibly harmful, not to dads - who cares about us? Not you, obviously - but to children. It's not a "men's rights" thing. I'm not going to bother with a CSB, but I've lived it, and I could not get custody of my kids to save them from a horrid situation until the harms I had been warning about had already been done to them. Why? Because dads are presumed to be less capable of parenting.

If you don't understand how false, damaging stereotypes are harmful to everyone against whom they are levied, you're an idiot.

I don't feel *personally* attacked or singled out by Michelle Obama and I'm 100% sure most people capable of critical thought understand it's far more nuanced than this snippet

But what I'm reading is that the most admired woman in America just used one of the most harmful divorce tropes as an "analogy everyone can understand" to get her point across. That's not "yokels sharing viral memes about 'taco truck Tammy' or "i'd like to speak to the manager' white lady hairdos on Facebook"

This is shiat that actually hurts families who are already hurting.

There it is. That is the way dads are stereotyped by society. That is why her comments were abhorrent. And the moment someone stands up and calls bullshiat, they are dismissed and mocked as MRA assholes drenched in body spray:

I voted for Trump and realize that it was a huge mistake. I wondered how he could have fooled me so badly and went back to re-read my comments about why I was going to vote for him on Fark before the election. I was told by some Farkers some things that turned out to be spot on, like they had a crystal ball at what would happen. But those Farkers comments were literally drowned out, on near every thread I participated in, by 20 other Farkers doing their hyperbole projection crapola. (TRUMP IS HITLER. TRUMP IS A WHITE SUPREMIST. TRUMP WILL START WWIII.) Along with 20 other Farkers telling me how great Hillary Clinton was. So I discounted all of it. Huge mistake. As another farker put it I thought we dodged a bullet with Hillary and turned around and got a shotgun blast in the face from Trump.

So I realize that Trump is a menace to the nation. I very much wish him to lose in 2020 and go away. The way to do this is to state the facts about him and let him hang himself with those facts. The way not to do this is to let some celebrity who is obnoxious to the people who might vote for him make up some horse crap analogy and use her fame to attention whore herself in the media to sell her book.

PlaidJaguar: Hyperbolic Hyperbole: one of the most harmful divorce tropes

A non-custodial parent letting the kids have fun and eat whatever they want such that they end up with a stomach ache is one of the most harmful divorce tropes?

Really?

Sometimes you spend the weekend with divorced dad. That feels like fun but then you get sick.

Stop softening what she said. ^ that's what she said. And the idea that dad is reduced to a guy you see on the weekend who only does fun things but also makes you sick, because now dad is a Disney dad who doesn't give a fark about raising a child right, and whose assumed lack of natural nurturing ability is why it's a foregone conclusion the mom gets custody, it's farking POISONOUS, and absolutely tied up inextricably with her remark.

And you know what? That bullshiat way we view men has EVERYTHING to do with the bullshiat way we view women, and if women were actually treated with the same respect as the other half the population, we might actually turn our view around on divorced dads being irresponsible ATMs that take you to Disneyworld. That, my dudes, is why we need feminism.

So yeah. It's disheartening seeing a brilliant, admired woman fall back on reinforcing the idea that men become irresponsible, emotionally useless cash machines once the marriage goes to shiat because it's setting everyone back.

PlaidJaguar: #NotAllDivorcedDads amiright?

I'm not defending the stereotype.

I'm mocking the farkers who feel irresistibly compelled to come into this thread and declare "Well I'M not like that!"

This wasn't a scholastic dissertation, it was a speech.  She used shorthand to convey an idea - she's not saying the shorthand is an accurate depiction of reality, nor is she making a judgement on the subject of that shorthand, she's using it because the image it invokes is the best encapsulation of the notion she is attempting to communicate.

There were lots of people who voted for Donald Trump because they wanted to shake up the system, because they wanted to instigate change.  And now they're getting what they want, and it turns out what they wanted isn't actually all that great and in fact hurts.

Just like a kid whose over-permissive non-custodial parent allows them to stay up all night and eat nothing but candy winds up getting sick, because what they wanted wasn't in fact what was best for them.

That's it.  That's the image.  It's not a commentary on all divorced parents - it's not about the parents at all.  It's about the voters - the children.

If you want to take what she's saying out of context and pretend she's making some commentary on divorced dads or something, you can (obviously) but it comes across as you looking for a reason to be offended, or you being manipulated into being offended by people taking her commentary out of context in order to provoke that reaction.

And, I mean, sure, I guess she could have made the analogy using a "fun uncle" or something, but that's both less relatable and carries some implied skeeziness in the modern era.  It would have less effectively communicated the concept.
