A previous police chief had authorized taping the phone line because the detective at the time didn't want to miss any possible tips. Boykins allowed the taping, now on Young's phone line, to continue but did not inform the detective that his calls were being recorded.

About a year later, shortly after Buttigieg had been elected to his first term in office at the age of 29, DePaepe discovered recordings on the line that she said revealed racist remarks and a potential criminal conspiracy between officers.

So, something that likely started before Buttigieg become mayor?

Also:
The controversy has hung over Buttigieg's two terms in office but his approval rating in South Bend is sky-high. South Bend is about 55 percent Democratic. Buttigieg won reelection to a second term with over 80 percent of the vote.

Clearly voters in South Bend weren't concerned as the Hill is being.

The Hill: secret tapes ooga booga.

The story: Buttigieg isn't recorded on the tapes. They're entirely unrelated to him other than, as Mayor, he might have the power to release them but is waiting on a court ruling or something before making a decision. And apparently pointing out that his city's police force has racist popo is some kind of shocking revelation. Honestly, I'd be shocked if we learned otherwise. An American police force without systemic racism coursing through it is that beyond the pale.

South Bend police officers that led to the 2012 demotion of Police Chief Darryl Boykins, the city's first ever black police chief.

As opposed to ruining his campaign, seems like this kind of scandal would endear him to on-the-fence Republicans.

We should go back to outsourcing our Democrat presidential candidates from Indonesian madrassas; at least with The Kenyan Connection, short form birth certificates, and nonexistent transcripts we had plausible deniability. Real candidates with real history are too much work.

Why won't he just do something that is probably illegal to put this all to rest?  Trump would have release the audio on his Twitter feed, and then denied doing so a day later.

So, black police chief illegally wiretaps white officers and then lies about it to new mayor.
New mayor, worried about city liability, demotes police chief.
Police chief sues claiming discrimination because the policy of chiefs illegally wiretapping officers had been allowed by previous mayors for white police chiefs.

I don't think that can o'worms is going to make Buttigieg look bad to ANYONE, really.

So, according to the article Buttigieg had nothing to do with the tapes and was alarmed about the fact that they were made in secret. I'm really tired of the timing of these non-stories.

Trump-humping wife of my college boyfriend lives in South Bend and is posting everything negative she can find about him. The latest article was about how he hasn't grown jobs or business there since he was elected including charts and graphs, how people are upset that he is sucking up to the elites at Notre Dame and not the working class, and that his program to demolish abandoned homes and to fine owners of unkempt property is racist and smacks of gentrification.  Of course, there's no mention of him being re-elected with 80% of the vote and why that happened if he's so ineffective.

Austin TX Mayor Steve Adler has thrown an endorsement to Buttigieg for his 2020 run at the current schmotus. Adler also called Buttigieg his mentor. Not sure how far the whole bromance is going to go, but I am glad my mayor jumped on the Buttigieg bandwagon.

Last week, the Maricopa County Democratic Party Sargent at Arms (and former Chair of the state Legislative District 24), took to social media to declare that Buttigieg was a racist and no one should vote for him. It was yet another one of his millennial social media shaming's. Days before, President Obama had talked about the 'circular firing squad', and I made comment using that quote.

The response was a fit of sorts, so I expanded comment to include Obama's entire comment. The response to that was a former black candidate for state house calling me 'ignorantly privileged'. Another black man scolded angrily replied that, as a white man, I wasn't allowed to quote Obama. The circular firing squad is real folks.

Strange. Every other time Pete's military service is brought up, it's derisively pointing out that he wasn't a "real soldier", he was just a Naval Intelligence puke. (I believe largely for his linguistic skills, but that's my own inference, not any reporting I've heard.) Being former Air Force intel myself (back in Gulf War 1), that just makes me like him a little bit more. Every NavInt spook I ever met was a consummate professional - thorough, meticulous, and very, very clever.

And yet now, according to you (and nobody else but you), he "volunteer[ed] to kill people", as though he were deliberately picking out targets to personally slaughter and bathe in the blood of his enemies..

Your concern is noted... and summarily discarded as meritless oogabooga.

Funny. I read that as Buttigieg's racist remarks appeal to Republicans.

What's missing from that statement is that, in a city with 100k residents, only 10k people voted in the 2015 mayoral election.

That's a very depressed and depressing turnout. Only 8% of the population wanted Buttigieg enough to vote for him and that was enough to secure him the victory as mayor.

It is an interesting thought experiment but what tape of Buttigieg would cause me to pick Trump over him.

I'm really not sure.  Torturing children or animals.  Maybe?  Something along those lines but it would be a tough call for me.
