(More Potatoes)   State fairs, all across the country, have what are essentially beauty contests for goats. If your goat wins, you can brag that you are the man with the best goat... which sounds kind of stupid when you say it out loud   (morepotatoes.com) divider line

When I was a child, my dad started out with one horse.  It was lonely out in the pasture by itself, so my father got a goat to keep it company until he could get another affordable horse.  The horse was so happy to see the goat that it reared up and started kicking around.  The goat was so terrified to see this that it ran all the way back to the herd that it came from...

And the same goes for pigs and llamas and cows all sorts of livestock. And sub variety even within them..
They also judge other stuff, like cheese, and butter, and have all sorts of other neat stuff like horse
races, and demolition derby with old combines, and chainsaw wood carving..Of course food galore..
The State Fair is a great place to spend a late summer day..

The County fair/ State fair circuit is serious business.  It's similar to the leagues system in baseball, in a way.  The point of it all is to promote the breeding of the very best quality food animals, so, the judging is all about the characteristics that make the animal most optimized for that purpose. The breeders that win the top prize then command a top dollar for their breeding stock that makes more of that animal. Depending on the species you're talking about, this could be thousands, even millions of dollars.  In hogs, these competitions have completely revamped the "ideal" animal, reducing the fat and promoting the lean muscle.  A champion barrow  from the 80's looks almost nothing like one today.
