Maybe this is the future of Star Wars: TV series instead of movies. Whip out a movie every once in a while for a big event, but keep the Star Wars galaxy rooted in television. Filoni already proved (several times) that it can excel in this format.

And by the way, HEY WARNER BROS! -- You see this shiat? Disney put the guy who does the ANIMATED shows in charge of a live-action show about the same characters and universe, and it's already getting high praise and is expected to be a hit. Maybe it's about goddamn time you looked up Paul Dini and Bruce Timm and asked them to pretty please guide your live-action DC movie universe, huh? They are the only ones who managed to put together a coherent DC universe on film/video and have it meet universal approval from the fans and critics alike.

Really excited about this series.  I like the casting of Gina Carraro too.  That and Weathers suggests a very action oriented show, which is what I'm hoping for -- not another show like the Netflix Marvel series were it's one episode of action per three episodes of talking.

Jawas, Ewoks and Gungans the Holy Trinity of all things great other than Jedi.

But in all seriousness I think it can be done I just have no clue how but for me that is what makes the whole idea  exciting it's an entire universe someone  should be able to tell a compelling story  that doesnt revolve around one family or space wizards.

I like the release strategy by Disney of this footage, and also the teaser trailer of Episode 9, the other day.

Rather than Disney telling us "You need to see this", and make a big event out of it.... They just drop the footage, unexpectedly and the audience tells themselves they need to see it.

Take away the Jedi and their associated tropes, and you're left with:
Space Opera
Raygun Gothic
Used Future
Space Western
Starfish Aliens
Robot Buddies
Space is an Ocean

i tried to put them in order of importance.  There's a reason why Firefly and Farscape both feel very much like Star Wars, while Star Trek: The Next Generation does not -- the Used Future/Raygun Gothic/Space Opera triad is the foundation on which Star Wars is built.  Things like Starfish Aliens and Robot Buddies are less important (Firefly has neither yet still feels very Star Warsy) but do help sell that you're watching Star Wars.  That's why Farscape is the most Star Warsesque TV show so far, it pretty much nails all of these except for Robot Buddies.  Buck Rogers in the 25th Century is the only other one that comes as close (it as Robot Buddies, but lacks Starfish Aliens), though the future (or New Chicago at least) is a bit too shiny and new.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. There NEEDS to be a movie about the cantina band. A humorous, lighthearted road-trip flick detailing the life of a bunch of wierd musicians of different species travelling from gig to gig. Imagine their groupies! and hell, great way to introduce new characters and worlds as well as a surprise appearance or two, like Yoda guzzling a beer while trying to start a mosh pit.

No, not the Cantina Band.  They lack individuality.  What we need is Max Rebo: A Star Wars Story.  Max Rebo himself is adorably weird.  His band is full of weird, visually distinctive characters.

Start the movie with Max Rebo backstage.  He has to tell himself his entire life story before he goes out to play.  Set the story over a twenty five year span that encompasses the rise and fall of the Empire.  Start with a young Max Rebo bursting onto the Galactic music scene with his wild, alien music.  Then the Empire rises, and with it xenophobia  and human supremacy, which leads to Max and his band finding doors being closed to them.  They're forced to eke out a career playing the outer rims, and at the band's lowest point they're playing Jabba's Palace.  The stress and pressure leads to drug abuse, broken relationships, etc.  Then when we return to Max backstage, we realize that this concert he's about to play is to celebrate the end of the Empire.

Good answer, but too generalist for my tastes.  About the only thing I've isolated for myself is that the sound of Star Wars means a lot - the music, the sound effects, etc.  It's like a space dog fight could be in any show, but the way TIE fighters sound swooshing by makes it feel more "right" to me.

Exactly.  Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story sort of demolished the entire music biopic -- I found Bohemian Rhapsody almost unwatchable because it adheres so slavishly to the Dewey Cox model -- by exposing how shallow and formulaic that generic rise-fall-return story used for all musicians really is.

But, at the same time, it suggests that you could take that same template and use it to ground a movie set in an utterly bizarre world.  That's why I think a Max Rebo story could really work.  You use the Dewey Cox template, and you don't even try to hide it, and that gives the audience firm ground on which to stand.  They may not understand the specific elements of the story -- like what the fark Max Rebo even is (a blue aardvark?) -- but they understand the story template.  That way you can throw all kinds of high weirdness at them without leaving them disoriented and confused.

Then your novelty comes not from the story, which is thoroughly generic, but from your setting, your characters, and the specific elements of Star Wars you choose to highlight and parody.  And with the Star Wars setting, you can get pretty silly.

The Broken Formula of Musical Biopics makes that exact point really well.
