Counter-argument: If they don't have enough data to prove that it doesn't harm youth then they don't have enough to prove otherwise.

Personally assuming there are already restrictions on youth with stiff enough penalties then there shouldn't be an issue. I do think 18 is a tad too young since research shows the brain is still developing up to 25 but you have to start somewhere and if alcohol restrictions make a good yardstick.

As someone who has long stated that recreational marijuana use is greatly damaging both to the individual and to society as a whole, the absence of any evidence of significant harm from legalizing recreational marijuana use has made me and those like me look extremely stupid. As such, I and those like me have suffered substantial harm, which just proves our point.

Related enough: I'm recovering from a TBI and I'm learning how much the TBI community is surpassed only by the autism community for an obsession with pseudoscientific non-cures. Have run into multiple people who say that marijuana is actually *good* for recovering from a TBI, because it's a "natural" plant.

Seriously. The line-ups for the legal store that opened near me in Ottawa a couple of weeks ago look like a convention for middle-aged civil servants. In fairness, basically no one lives in Ottawa except middle-aged civil servants, but still.

Should we start using Becky as a unit of measure for cannabis deaths?  Let's define one person per year as one BeckyRIP.

I have seen people ruin their family life because they couldn't put down the pipe long enough to become parents to their kids.  If you want to become a couch slug, that is on you.  Just don't have kids.

However, I have seen way more people's lives destroyed by alcohol.  Given the choice, I would keep weed and get rid of alcohol.

And yes, I have known many people who smoke the occasional joint or have the occasional drink and they are fine.  But I have known far too many people who use one or the other, or both, on a daily basis.  If you can't get through one day without booze or weed, you got a problem.

As someone who doesn't smoke, doesn't intend to, and in general thinks drugs are stupid anyway (disclaimer, so is skydiving, but you do you), this is the important part of the article for me:

In states with legalized recreational marijuana, police now no longer spend time on marijuana arrests and can spend more time on solving these types of crime. FBI data from Colorado and Washington show that crime clearance rates-the number of times that the police solved a crime-increased for both violent and property crimes after legalization.

I've known a lot of potheads. I've never known them to be particularly into crime other than their use of weed. IMHO, busting users is stupid and counterproductive - unless your goal is just to pad your arrest numbers. As trite as it is to say, it's relevant here: "Go catch real criminals."

2019-04-15 10:42:47 AM
As a person who works with young people on a fairly regular basis, the argument that marijuana must remain illegal to protect youth drives me crazy. Most of the teens I interact with assume that, if marijuana is legalized, a person will have to be at least 21 years old to buy and use it unless there is a medical prescription filled by parents in the mix. Just last month, a 16 year old boy told me that he does not want marijuana legalized because then he will not be able to get it anymore.

He related that he has heard stories that "in the old days" people would buy alcohol for people who weren't 21, but noted "you can't find anyone to do that anymore." I assume he's tried. The boy stated that marijuana was easier for he and his peers to get than either alcohol or cigarettes. Typical of these kids, he finished with expressing his opinion that cigarettes are gross and disgusting indicating that he didn't know anyone who would want to get those anyway. I went on my way when he and a couple of other teens began to discuss grandparents or great-Aunts or great-Uncles that smoke cigarettes and awful they smell.

Inhaling smoke is bad for you.

That said, one puff helps me sleep so well, I figure it's a fair trade. It's roughly equivalent to half an Ambien and, unlike melatonin, helps me fall asleep and stay asleep.

I got my wife to try using a pre-loaded oil cartridge with a vape pen because she hates the smell and taste of smoking weed.  It's milder than smoke because there's no burning plant material.  She takes a single puff just like she was smoking a cigarette as a teen and she's all set for the night.  It's also much less trouble than smoking since there's no setup beyond turning on the pen and no cleanup at all.

The half gram cartridge seemed expensive at $60, but it's only about half gone after more than 30 uses so the cost per decent night's sleep seems pretty reasonable.

I have ADHD so I can't really partake because it affects me a lot worse than most people. But if it wasn't for that, I'd much prefer pot over ethanol.

Ethanol is ten times more carcinogenic than bacon, but you don't hear that much because of the booze industry, and because it's information most people don't want to believe anyway.

Fun fact: any state which is so inclined may lower its voting age to 17. The 26th Amendment says that people 18 and older can't be denied the right to vote because of their age, but it does not say that people under 18 must be denied voting rights.
