I've already met Democrats.

This is why we need a tax on Wall Street, and on wealth in general.

I sort of expected another piece on survivalists selling MRE's, but what we have is a note that energy companies are quietly investing in renewables to cut their own energy costs.

Pro-business = indifference towards negative externalities.

But they're not indifferent.  They actively fight against efforts to be more environmentally friendly, even when it's a net zero or negative cost.

Yea, but that's all legislation that will "give the gubment" more power over a "Leftist hoax" with the ulterior goal of granting the government more power.

News Flash:  There is a tax on Wall Street, it's called Capital Gains.  There is also a tax on the wealth, it's called Income Tax.

Because they know someone else will break down and foot the bill for cleanup. Privatize profits, etc.

Some think that way.

Some others simply expect to be long dead or for the Lord to return (depending on their level of Christian devotion) before the effects of the pollution inconvenience them personally.

Dealing with those effects they prefer to leave to their heirs and successors, who will find that there is no way to hedge against the collapse of industrial capitalism (not to say human extinction) beyond doing all in one's power to prevent it---and by then it'll be too late.

Income tax is a tax on income. You don't become wealthy from traditional income, you become wealthy from capital gains, annuities and dividends.

There are three capital gains tax brackets, the highest of which is 20%

The highest income tax bracket is 37%.

If you make 200 million from the market you pay 20% on it. If you make 40k a year in income, you pay 22%.

Capital gains aren't treated as regular income. They should be. If they were, I agree a wealth tax is unnecessary.

Of course, major energy companies are investing in a way to hedge their bets.  It's just like how they contribute money to both major political parties. No matter who wins, they win.

So, basically, a sprinkling of conspiracy theories on top. :P

Why do I pay a higher percentage of my income from actual labor than rich people pay in capital gains?

They're not. The conservation ethic requires the land be kept in good shape for future generations.

Ask your congress person not me.  I was just pointing out that there are taxes on pretty much all forms of income.

disaster capitalism
noun
censorious the practice (by a government, regime, etc) of taking advantage of a major disaster to adopt liberal economic policies that the population would be less likely to accept under normal circumstances

Just part of that beloved neoliberalism you're all for.

No, there's an equal amount of graft. Because it's business.
If we stopped doing so much "business" all the time, we might have a chance.
But you all don't know how, and you can't conceive of it. You aren't working for charity.
This is the same economic system we all use, and nobody minds when it works out for them, personally. They don't mind when they profit. But all those other people--they shouldn't profit quite so much. That's where our doom lies--when you have to move down the perceived economic ladder.

You all are precious, precious snowflakes.
