There are 14 other Durhams in the U.S., so at least we know where it will likely happen next.

The Durham School of the Arts is nearby and reported no injuries but said it was creating collages and craft clay sculptures because the kiln is not available.

Isn't boring going sideways like running a power line or something versus drilling straight down? Not sure how that works with marking where the line is in 2D on the surface.

I clearly remember that Edison fire.  We saw a glow from outside the dorm window and assumed the dining hall was on fire.  Being goofy inquisitive college students that loved a good train wreck, off we went across campus to get a better look.

The dining hall was fine but the glow was farther off in the distance, so like idiot pedestrian moths we kept running toward the light.  And running.  And running.

We eventually came to the bank of the Raritan River, from which we could see the flames and actually feel the heat from miles away in the next town.

I'm not surprised that a major nationwide network was put in place to avoid that kind of disaster in the future.  The scale of that fire cannot be overstated.  It was truly massive.

I have the fullest confidence that after a thorough investigation the people whose negligence ultimately caused this disaster that has resulted in destruction, injuries and even death will suffer no consequences so long as they are sufficiently wealthy or politically connected.

The one in NJ was epic. Working overnight in a high rise on a software release. Sudden epic blinding light,  building swayed, my chair moved - shoving me into the desk. I looked, thought it was an airplane that did not make it to Newark. Watched the epic show from the 15th floor. Looked 'ghostbusters' like...

I was living in NJ in 94 when the Durham Woods explosion happened. Had a housemate who worked at Rutgers. She was walking towards her workplace building when it happened. She said that the whole side of the building lit up orange - her first thought was that NYC had been nuked.

A human resources employee told Rogalski and his co-workers that authorities were investigating a gas leak across the street and they should remain inside.

I hope the survivors and next of kin sue the living shiat out of the city. That's if the building was involved.

I used to work in downtown Durham, NC, and we would go to the Torrero's mexican restaurant on that same block. Fun Fact: one of the buildings next to the one that blew up had a collection of rare Porsches in it, which I believe belong to Jim Goodnight, the billionaire CEO of SAS. They would occasionally open the garage door on the back to move a car out, and the view inside was glorious.

Last year we dug up a three phase power cable that the power company had failed to mark. The system can be less than perfect at times.
Also had to tell my employee who was standing in a water filled hole with the cable to gtfo, turned around a minute later and he was back in the hole. He no longer is with this organization.

CSB:

I was doing renovations on a house and we were going to dig footings for a retaining wall so I got the reports from all utilities for the house. The report said that the gas line was one meter north of the property line at a depth of one meter.

The wall we were digging was parallel to the gas line almost 20 feet north. I painted a line where the gas was supposed to be and I stood by as a spotter while the excavator started digging.

First scoop of dirt I saw yellow and said to myself "huh, I've never seen a yellow root like that befo- OH FARK!"

Thankfully the operator was digging with a smooth bucket so he didn't damage the line. We dug up the rest by hand and moved the gas line away from the wall.

Sad, but it could have been far worse.  From the jalopnik video it appeared that the building did not go up in flames. 'THAT' would have been catastrophic. Looks like a lot of work will be required by a team of restoration pros. Also from the video, a shop worker was already inside looking around. The bay door is open on the shop.
