The people haven't changed any.  They're still there.  And a power vacuum won't be a vacuum for long.

Yep. ISIS is gone until someone shoots up a disco in Brussels or Paris or Chicago in their name. Al-Quaeda showed that you don't need territory to kill a lot of innocent westerners.

How many hogsheads in a Caliphate?

Seriously, the fight against them seems to be proceeding well due to a multi national force, but as the article ends, they're still around, and it's a bit early to be pretending they can't cause more harm.

Wouldn't the joke make more sense as ISWAS? I mean, we phonetically pronounce it ISIS as "Ice-Izz" not "Izz-Izz." Ah, I'm overthinking this. Should really get some work done today.

THIS. So much this.

The problem isn't a particular group by a particular name.

The problem is hundreds of millions of people happen to live in places with shiatty dysfunctional economies, no education, and some iron age customs they hang on to because they haven't got anything else.

That doesn't get better after you drop some bombs and kill off the individuals who were disaffected enough to get violent and those willing to take advantage of them for personal power.

It's a factory for creating angry violent extremists and all that's been accomplished is to remove the last batch of product.

The scattered remnants will attempt to melt into the population and then re-coalesce once the heat is off, which is why it'll be important to follow up with rooting them out. I hope the coalition forces are smart enough to not let it drop until they've finished that part of the job.

There's no point in rooting anyone out if the conditions that created ISIS remain unchanged.

On the contrary, having foreign forces running around trying to fight an endless covert war against people who may not exist hiding among the populace is exactly the sort of thing that perpetuates these problems.

Trump is keeping his campaign promises, but of course nothing positive he does is ever reported on, and when it is, CNN is careful to remove any credit towards him.

When Obama was in office, Fark was all:  Alleppo, oh poor Alleppo, we're going to end this candidates run because he didn't cry for Alleppo!

Trump comes into office, handles it; Fark liberals- silent.

filetofish bigmac quarter pounder with cheese: Trump is keeping his campaign promises, but of course nothing positive he does is ever reported on, and when it is, CNN is careful to remove any credit towards him.

Really?  He built a wall?  Nope.  Brought back coal?  Nope.  Got rid of the ACA?  Nope.  Increased manufacturing jobs?  Nope.  Revitalized the rust belt?  Nope.  Drained the swamp?  Nope.  Dealt with North Korea?  Nope.  Passed tax reform that put money back in the pockets of his voting base?  Nope.  Brought prescription prices down?  Nope.  Brought healthcare costs down?  Nope.  Stock market is flat since January 1, 2018 (when is policies would start having an effect), National debt is up and accelerating.

Yeah, he's done a hell of a job on his core campaign promises.  Other than the really racist ones, he's gone nowhere.

And now, "dealing with ISIS"?  He's obsessed with ground taking, which is the WWII way of looking at things, and the exact types of measures that are the reason we couldn't show real progress in Vietnam.  Take all the ground.  Rack up kill counts.  Doesn't matter when their numbers are back up above the 30,000 line (according to all intelligence reports), when they were a tenth of that a few years ago.  We're no closer to a victory than we were when we started because of boneheaded political decisions, and now we're actively going backwards.

So yeah, good luck with all this "winning".

Of course you move the goalpost, that's all your side can do.  If we didn't push ISIS into a corner, you'd crow about how much real estate they've gained.

You're wrong on every other assertion you made as well, for example, when Obama was in charge, NK was flying missiles over Japan on a regular basis.  Trump increased sanctions and actually got a dialog going that put an end to that.  He's not done, and it's not a quick process, but he's done a hell of a lot more than Obama accomplished.

We'd have funding for the wall, if Obama didn't send billions to Iran.  From the Washington Post:  "On Jan. 16, 2016, the same day four American detainees, including The Washington Post's Jason Rezaian, were released, a jumbo jet carrying $400 million in euros, Swiss francs and other currencies landed in Tehran. That money purportedly was partial payment of an outstanding claim by Iran for U.S. military equipment that was never delivered. Soon after, $1.3 billion in cash followed."

State Department officials said they *leveraged* the payment for release of the hostages.  That's a funny way to spell ransom.
