27% of dog owners raise vegan dogs - here's what they eat

Squirrels, chipmunks, the neighbors cat.

Someone on here had a story about a cat on a vegan diet years back. They said they found a mouse in a drawer and the cat made it disappear very quickly. They ended up changing the cat's diet to a more realistic one after that.

Another article posted here today states that 3% of Americans self-identity as vegans. This article said this {27% of owners with dogs on a vegan diet} were all vegan and one vegetarian.

That indicates either: an incredibly higher number of vegans than omnivores own dogs, or, the sample group is made of some kinda nonsense.

Cats will die if they don't eat meat - unlike dogs and humans they actually require it as a major component of their diet - TLDR the cat was forced to eat things it caught to survive.

The article completely misstated the study's findings, which were that 5.8% of survey respondents self-identified as vegan, and that 27% of those vegans fed a dog or cat a vegan diet (higher for dogs than cats), so 1.6% of respondents fed a dog or cat a vegan diet.

I'd guess even that greatly overstates the case, because in my experience, a solid majority of people don't know what "vegan" means, many don't know what "meat" means, and a surprisingly high proportion of self-identified vegetarians/vegans freely admit to eating meat when specifically asked if they eat various types of meat. ("Chicken ain't meat!", etc.)

lilistonic: Another article posted here today states that 3% of Americans self-identity as vegans. This article said this {27% of owners with dogs on a vegan diet} were all vegan and one vegetarian. <...snip...>

The study didn't mention the nationality of its surveymonkey.net survey respondents but did note that "Results found that pet owners were more likely to be vegetarian (6.2%; 229/3,673) or vegan (5.8%; 212/3,673) than previously reported for members of the general population." I'd hypothesize that surveymonkey users are more likely to be vegetarian or vegan than the general population, but they didn't have a control group of non-pet-owning surveymonkey users to determine that.

Survey monkey participants are paid micro amounts of money for their opinions. So in other words, tweakers.

What I'd like to take from that is that far fewer than over 1/4 of pet dogs are given an inadequate diet for their needs.

The people who can be healthy as vegans should go right on ahead, with their supplements and things. But treating dogs like people seems selfish to me. I expect there are ways to feed a dog with respect to the earth as well as its needs.

Reminds me of an old Jerry Clower bit about a man whos dog ate only turnip greens. The neighbor said he had never seen a dog eat turnip greens, much less live only on turnip greens. The man replied, "Yep, it took the dog about a month."

Cats are obligate carnivores. Feeding a cat a vegan diet is patently unethical.

Dogs are opportunistic. They require a certain amount of protein from meat. I feed my dog a grain-free dog food, but the list of fruits and vegetables that he loves is extensive. Currently he is overweight due to lack of exercise over the winter, so I replace a portion of his food with cabbage. Most fruits and many vegetables (carrots, squash, sweet potatoes) contain too much sugar, so he gets them infrequently.

"For cats, PETA have suggested nutritional yeast and pieces of melon, while mashed chickpeas and veggie burgers are also popular choice. It might take a while for your pet to adapt to the changes if they are used to supermarket-bought foods, but slowly changing what you feed them will help them to adjust."

F*ck me dead if those guys aren't the biggest twats ever.

We need a real Jurassic Park, just to let the PETAroids go and protest. Then open all the fences and film it.

27% of dog owners need to check their omnivore privelige and maybe switch to a bunny. And who actually listens to PETA's advice on keeping pets alive? That'd be like taking dietary advice from Jim Jones.

Also 26% my left butthole. I'd be shocked if it was 1%.  Why in f*cking f*ck would somebody bother to feed their f*cking dog vegan f*cking dog food if they weren't a f*cking f*cked up vegan themselves? There is not mother f*cking way that 26% of people are f*cking vegans. Even in Canada. F*ck.

Got a cat that voluntarily eats green beans/mange touts/that kind of thing.

She's fed on a completely normal diet of meat-based cat food, but every so often when she's mooching around the table, I'll chuck her a piece of veg, and she'll take it, go elsewhere, and eat it.

No idea what's going on there; I grew up in a primarily cat family, and have never known a cat to eat veggies. Maybe she just likes the crunchy texture or something.

My dogs love apples, carrots, strawberries.
Basically anything that falls to the floor and isn't recovered fast enough.
Doesn't mean I'm going to feed them nothing but floor droppings.

I have a cat that can't seem to get enough grass. Poor baby's waiting for actual spring when there's a lawn to munch on.

Sometimes he'll go for tortilla chips and goes bonkers around mint leaves (which are in the same family as catnip).

What's amusing to me is citrus, which apparently finds utterly repulsive. I get the distinct sense he's thinking, "what the hell is wrong with you?!" when I eat an orange after letting him sniff it.

27% is such an obviously absurd number, I came here looking for the reality. Most people feed their dogs dog food, duh.

I fed the cat a vegan diet once.  He ate the dog the next day.
