(Bangor Daily News)   There are a lot of adjectives you can use for roads during mud season. Good is not one of them   (bangordailynews.com) divider line

Parking lot @ work has 12" thick ice pack with ruts and rivers running through it during a warm day.  Wonderful.

If they don't want to pay taxes for good roads, they should not be complaining.

After living in Texas for a year and a half, I had no idea how really bad New England roads really were

Our roads are insanely broken. Our system is broken.

Vermont roads are pretty good - they use local granite.

Certainly one of the things I don't miss from when I lived 3 miles down a dirt road in Vermont. Ended up taking the hubcaps off the car, the mud would just suck them off.

I made a $45 plywood pontoon bridge across the back yard yesterday.

But yeah the roads are zany. That's why Mainers have always been slow drivers.

My first thought was where the f is Waldo?

Also, don't go to Waldo anyway.

On the plus side, it means no election this year. Unless perhaps you are voting the wrong way. There might be an election for patriotic people who vote the right way automatically and who are political donors.

I thought Mainers drove that way because they are old, white, and trying to spot deer in farmer's fields they can shoot from the comfort of their pick-up or car.

These aren't main or secondary roads, these are tertiary roads which are, up here, traditionally dirt roads. This is mud season, the time before frost comes out of the ground but after the snow starts to melt. The water has nowhere to go except to create a thick layer of gumbo. Add in a road-ramming shiatstain with a penchant for mud-bugging, well, Mistah Man, you got the start of a good brouhaha.

Waldo, Maine: population <800

The tax base to pave everything probably isn't there.

Have a problem with dirt roads? Don't move to an area with dirt roads.
We're tucked away in a "neighborhood" of a few dozen 20 acre properties in the Cascade foothills. Paved county road to the edge, the rest is gravel. We maintain it, plow it in the wintertime etc. Everyone here knows how things work, and there's a reason why we moved here. Guy moves from Phoenix, is annoyed by the dust during summer, too much snow and ice in the winter, now wants the county to come in and pave, maintain, plow. For a price, of course.
Tampa/St Pete would be the perfect area for that guy, but no, he wants to be the rugged outdoorsman...until the outdoors get a bit too rugged, and now he expects everyone to change.

Muddy roads are fun, lets me get some more of my money's worth out of the AWD when it isn't winter.
