If the code only allows a 3 foot fence don't be a dick because you have to take down your six foot fence.

If this were NJ they'd find a headless mannequin and if he kept up the shenanigans he'd get a beat down.

Don't fark with code enforcement.

Yeah.  The guy was a dick to begin with as far as the fence went, and then he compounded it with a childish and dickish response, so now if someone's stolen his mannequins... I have zero sympathy for him.

What do you suppose they're doing to that poor mannequin?

Windus said he originally built the tall fence in order to let his dogs out into the backyard.

Yeah, most dogs aren't going to have a hard time getting over a three-foot fence.

Why?  Because he was trying to keep his dogs in his yard?  My friend had a house in SoCal in a development, and it had a 6 foot fence standard.  He had a chow mix mutt about 30lbs or so, and the thing figured out he could get to the crossbesm near the top of the fence and turbo-boost off of that to escape.  He did it almost every day.

The backyard has a privacy fence. He wanted to extend it to close in the street-adjacent side yard, too.   If he had paid attention to set back requirements he could have done it, but it wouldn't have enclosed the entire yard.

Sounds like this guy's seriously on the fence.

Could the fence be 6 foot if it were chainlink?  I mean, is line of sight the reason for the code?

2019-03-23 10:29:53 PM
The backyard was already fenced in.  The photo is from the Zillow listing when he bought it.   He extended that fence to enclose more of the yard.  If the fence was about halfway closer to the house he probably would have been fine.   He could still do it.

Yes, I am allowed a 6' fence, so the neighbors don't have to deal with the gruesome Deadpool scene in my backyard.

So if he dug a 4-foot moat just inside his fence to make the dogs have to jump 7...

Here we would call that the side yard.

If I had been the buyer I'd have looked at the code for the setback that constitutes the front of the property versus the setback that constitutes the side of the property. If it turns out that the front was legally defined as the area along the long-axis of the house, then I'd have probably fought on those grounds. A house here doesn't get two fronts, there's only one front and enclosing the backyard all of the way up to the setback (which is probably where the front of the house ends facing the street) would be legal.

But if the guy had joined an HOA I would feel even less sympathy for him.

So that would be six points (3 x 2) then, even if they touch the fence? Anyways, if a neighbor trains their damn dog to jump my fence so that their precious can take a dump, that dump better damn well happen while the dog is getting airtime.

Even if he had to have a fence that high for his dog, he could have sought a variance. This is one of the things you work out beforehand rather than asking for forgiveness afterwards.

I'm going with the owner trying to justify the fence by stealing his own stuff.

That rule is there for a reason; blind corners are an accident waiting to happen, literally.

That's no guarantee in Sonoma County.
My old cross-the-street neighbor in Petaluma got all the permits and permissions to build a 6 foot tall fence out to a specific spot. Another neighbor, a particularly evil old twat of a c*nt b*tch, reported that it blocked her view, so the good neighbor had to spend a lot more money rebuilding it.

As for the view it blocked, the only thing blocked was the neighbor's bedroom window. Twatty c*nt b*tch just didn't ever want people to be happy. She was the neighbor who would slash any ball that a kid would accidentally kick onto her property. She'd turn on all the outdoor lights when we would have the neighborhood 4th of July block party, just to mess with our view of the fireworks. Her husband, a good catholic who wouldn't divorce her, built a small bedroom in their garage, just so he could be away from her yet still live there.
