Is this 2 game ovation going to push back ichiro's HOF clock? That would suck

Yes.  So now he'll be eligible for the Baseball HoF two years after Creed is eligible for the R&R HoF, not the year after.

I dont like the Reds, but baseball is better with tradition than it is with meaningless new games. Even if MLB feels the need to do "speciaL"opening games in Japan they should still go back to opening day and opening games that feature the oldest remaining team The Reds

Are you implying that Ichiro is anything other than a first-ballot lock?

I propose to cancel the rest of the regular season and just keep the standings where they are.

I really wish Ichiro could have played more years in his prime in America, because he would definitely have taken the hits record away from cheater, crook, and all around asshole Pete Rose.

I had a scary thought. If the current playoff drought continues through the 2019 season, which it almost surely will, then the length of the drought will equal that of the playoff drought at the start of the franchise's existence (1977-1994).

At least this 18-year stretch had the occasional winning season mixed in. And wasn't in the Kingdome.

How did he cheat? I'm not arguing the fact he's an asshole, because, well, he is.

I hate-hate-hate this idiotic idea of playing overseas games that count in the standings and then coming back for more spring training games.

What the hell do the fans in Japan or Paraguay care if the game counts in the standings?  They're going to come out or not come out anyway.

You're penalizing a team that agreed to go overseas by saying "oh, and if you're groggy from jet lag and the long trip and lose the games, fark you, you start three games down in the standings".

The oldest remaining team is the Braves.  They didn't take any seasons off along the way.  The Reds did.

And the current Reds team is only notionally the successor to the original Red Stockings from 1869   The Braves organization has an unbroken history dating back to 1876.

The Reds' lineage goes like this:

1869-1870 Cincinnati Red Stockings (disbanded in 1870)
1876-1879 Cincinnati Reds (disbanded at the end of the 1879 season)
1881-         Cincinnati Reds (no relationship other than name to prior teams)

The Braves' lineage goes like this:

1871-        Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves

The Braves' lineage begins in 1871 as a team and 1876 as a member of the National League.  Should have said.  In either case, they predate the founding of the club currently known as the Cincinnati Reds, which was founded in 1881.

Oh, he's definitely a first-ballot inductee.  But now that year will be 2024 or 2025.

^^^ This. I was a little confused with the "Baseball season starts today" things I saw, for me the Freeway Series is the end of spring training. The Angels don't start their slog to an 81-81 record until 3/28 when they open at the sewer pit in Oakland.

The spectators may not care if it impacts the standings, but they will care if they go out and see a bunch of AAA players and a few Major Leaguers taking it easy.

... and took two years off for the Chicago Fire.  The club had to be re-established after that.

The Japanese fans just care so long as they got wa.  If they got wa, it's all good.

That's why they do things like calling players safe when they're a yard short of the bag; it's all about the wa.

The Red Stockings were the forerunners of the Braves. Harry Wright even took the name with him.
