Why are so many horses dying lately? Or is it that we're just now hearing more of it?

We heard about this particular horse because of his progeny mainly.  The deaths at Santa Anita and (a couple years ago) Del Mar were above the norm and there was no real answers for the higher than average casualty rate.

Horses die all the time.
