It's right there in the Bible! You have to do it or you go to Hell. Jesus said so you heathens.

Big difference between this and the flower arrangement case is that a hotel/B&B is pretty much the definition of a public accommodation and this has no real message (supporting gay marriage) that would be supported except "Eww, gay buttsex"

The conservative-majority court could yet weigh in soon on both issues as it has a separate appeal pending involving a different bakery in Oregon that refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple.

I hope when that one comes up someone thinks to mention one of the reasons the fine was so large is because they posted the couple's address and phone number on their Facebook face so their bigot fans could send them death threats.

Forgive me, but that sounds a lot like the "there's no such thing as race" heckle I hear from conservatives from time to time.  While it's true that 'race' in our species isn't a biological attribute (or rather, we're one race.  The rest died before we invented the written word).  But of course race exists.  It's a sociological concept, not a biological one.

In the same sense, of course conservative Christians exist.  It's a political concept, not a theological one.

Well, yes, but actually no.

I mean, sure, you can call yourself a christian and actively deny every single Christlike ideal, value and action. Maybe the word "Christianity" has split into two definitions that are antonyms.

And I guess north Korea is a democratic republic for the people. After all, those are all political concepts.

Or maybe, bear with me here for a second, we accept that A) words have meaning, and B) people are capable of lying, even to themselves. I know, I know. Hard to believe, but bear with me here, because I think they could be right.

Oh, I can accept both of those assertions with ease.

Perhaps the word Christian means only "Believes in the divinity or semi-divinity of Jesus of Nazareth" and nothing more.  With that broad of a definition, I'm sure you can easily accept the existence of Nazi Christians.  Now I'll concede that my definition may be too broad, but I need to hear a good reason why.

And let's add a third assertion there: C) People are capable of honestly believing all sorts of stupid shiat, even internally inconsistent concepts.  I find this one to be especially true of people that isolate themselves too much from the world at large.  While I freewheel with the ignore button here, that's only because this is hardly my only social outlet.

As for the DPRK, they're just lying as far as I can tell.

Just so we're clear, we agree that north Korea calling itself a democratic republic doesn't make it one, right? Cause the whole thing hinges on us agreeing on this.

Your definition is overly broad, and I have two reasons why:

First, let's get this out of the way, it's not what Google says.

Second, and this is the important one, not a single major Christian denomination would accept that definition.Their whole schtick is based on it being insufficient. Shiat, the very fact that I'm talking about denominations of Christianity (and let's not get started on the Christian/Catholic can of worms) is proof that it's overly broad.

You can have nazis self-identify as Christians. You can't have Nazi christians. There is a subtle yet all-too-important difference between the two.

No True Christ = No True Christians

His most powerful commandment, according to the authors of his character, was to sell all you have and give the proceeds to the poor. Now, there may have been a few people in history who have done so, but I can actively name a few hundred preachers who make millions of dollars of tax-free money each year and have never performed this extreme beneficent act of anti-selfish charity.

Otherwise, Christianity is a combination of universal truths (be nice to others, share with strangers, appreciate the life you have been given) and belligerent nonsense (you face a binary afterlife, never get divorced, 'I am the only way to find truth', 'I am the incarnation of God so worship me', spread my word to everybody you meet, don't wash your hands before eating, the Mosaic Law is still God's word, demons cause illness).

There is no argument that even if 1. Jesus existed and did miracles and is the Son/Incarnation of God, 2. All of his words have value and 3. He is going to return one day, his current followers don't listen to a single word ever written that he purportedly said.

Yes, I agree that the DPRK isn't a republic (well, maybe in the archaic sense of the word, but let's not do Etymology Hour, that's boring) or democratic, or a democratic republic.  It is for all practical purposes an absolute monarchy.

Your first reason is demonstrably false:

Chris·tian
/ˈkrisCHən/
adjective
1.
relating to or professing Christianity or its teachings.
"the Christian Church"
noun
1.
a person who has received Christian baptism or is a believer in Christianity.
(emphasis mine)

Seems to me the only way we can tell if someone is a believer in anything is to ask them (for the time being, I'd bet that directly scanning the brain and getting data from that will become a reality in our lifetimes).

Your second reason, that not a single denomination would accept my definition:  Irrelevant.  What we're looking for here is common ground among all denominations and we can only go on what those denominations say about their beliefs.  Because of historical sectarian divisions, theological schisms, geographical distances and just plain coo-coo-bananas-wannabe-prophets that have come and gone, what we have for common ground is the dictionary.

Not entirely true. The legal costs involved in putting together a SCOTUS appeal are huge - so, now that litigation can proceed, here's to hoping that the court requires the B&B Bigot pay the legal costs of the lesbian couple.

She took a five-figure case and most likely turned it into a six-figure payday for their lawyer.

Simple question:

Does the B&B owner turn away unmarried straight (non-family) straight couples who to share a single room?  If not, she is potentially condoning one type of biblically unacceptable sexual activity while refusing to refusing to admit couples who might be into a different unacceptable activity.

Well, SOME of us have read our bibles thoroughly enough so we didn't miss the part where the Samaritan bent low to whisper to the Jew, "You're not gay, are you?" before giving him aid.

And the part where Christ expressed his love for the Apostles, and then laughed awkwardly and clarified, "But not in a gay way. That's gross."

And of course the part where Christ stepped in and rescued a woman from being stoned as punishment for her sexual sins. "A slut's sins may be pardoned, not so the homo," he taught.

And then, right before he died, he turned to the dudes hanging next to him. "You guys aren't gay, right? Just murderers? Ok, we're good then."
