Well, one thing the article got right is that if a donut shop can't produce a good glazed raised then you're not really a donut shop. That means you Dunkin. And KK is marginal.

We have Jonny Doughnuts near me. These are the most disgusting lumps of greasy fried dough I've ever encountered. But somehow they sell themselves as 'gourmet'. Gross.

That sounds interesting, I don't typically have a torch handy though. Maybe I can put one directly to a stove burner for a minute to get that effect.

Not sure the 'murica tag is warranted here.  This isn't one of those calorie/fat bomb monstrosities you see on glutinous food shows or state fairs.  Not that the donut is healthy, but this is just bruleeing the existing sugar already on it.

In a pan maybe, but I wouldn't put it over an open flame burner directly.  The sugar will just melt and drip off.

This happens to be my favorite donut at Mojo Donuts here in South Florida, the Creme Brulee donut:
