Why would any American be in Venezuela at this point?

The only reason I could think of would be a journalist covering the situation down there.
Even that is risky IMO.

Just join the caravan of illegals headed north to the U.S.
You'll be fine.
Plus you get free stuff when you get here.

They generally don't admit to having them in a country being destabilized until some low level intern leaks the information to the Washington Post a few years later.

Venezuela is what happens when you let a lying kleptocracy take control on the back of a media channel that pushes the leader's lies unfiltered without a word of criticism. It takes a while, but eventually reality does assert itself. Lies can't fill an oil tanker to pay for imports or change the fact local officials can be as corrupt as they want when the free press has been snuffed out.

Don't worry, you won't be booked on a 737 Max 8 for the trip back - US is out of its range........as are most other places, it seems.

Thought subby was making the lamest 737 MAX joke yet. Glad I was wrong.

Pretty much everywhere outside four or five miles from the end of the runway is outside of the MAX-8's range.

Anyone with common sense and the means has already left.  The people who remain are either stuck (which is tragic) or morons.  The latter will become familiar with Darwin.  I won't shed a single tear for them.

I really feel sorry for those poor bastards down there, even though they voted Chavez in, thus starting the downward spiral. Maduro will ultimately go, but it looks to me like the country is ruined for the foreseeable future, since even the people trying to get rid of him are still themselves socialists.

You certainly overwhelmed us with facts as to why socialism is a good thing in a thread about a socialst country in total collapse.

I'm convinced!

A great many philosophies are wonderful on paper.  I would put Socialism, Communism and Capitalism all in the mix as potentially wonderful.

They all begin to suck monkey nuts due to greed, corruptions, and laziness.

Take away dishonesty.  Give everyone willingness and motivation to work toward the common good.  Convince people that Spock was right, and that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.

All three of those can work splendidly.  But none of them ever will because as soon as you set something in motion, some asshole will try to think of a way he can get more than his share of the good, do less than his share of the work, or just look for a way to get free stuff.

'Socialism' did not kill Venezuela. Nationalism, a complicit press, and rampant grift/corruption did. Also, don't base your national economy on one finite export.

Care to discuss any of those aspects of the collapse?

And Capitalism is different?
Oh yes, it enables the asshole, so that once he gets more than his share, he's basically beyond reproach.

The failure of socialism killed the Venezuelan economy.  There is no other way to slice it.

You socialism only works in its expansionist international guide?

When it can export misery to others?

Nationalism did not kill Venezuela.  Nationalizing private industry did.  That is not nationalism.  That is socialism.  Actually it's communism.  The people own the means of production.  And by the people they mean the representatives of the people, and by representatives of the people they mean the government.  And by government they mean the executive function of The Party.  The Party was chosen to represent the people 25 years ago.  Now there is no need for the people to choose again.  They made their choice clear 25 years ago.  Okay, okay.  We'll still have elections, but we'll make sure they just reconfirm the choice of The Party to represent them.  It just makes sense; they already chose The Party 25 years ago.  Why would they change their minds now; The Party is doing such a bang up job running everything.  The Party told them so.   That's socialism in a nutshell.  Not the theory of course, but the way it always seems to work out once the socialist party gets control of all the levers of government.

It's really not all the different from a theocracy.  Just minus the believing in God part.
