Software isn't a car. It doesn't just keep chugging along so long as you do maintenance. It's too complicated for that.

The closest thing I can think of to a "static" OS is OS X, and even that has had some legacy-breaking changes on Apple's part.

How recent a processor gets support on Win7?  I don't think any Zen motherboard is allowed to have those drivers, and you're probably out of luck dealing with Meltdown/Spectre flaws on the Intel side with newish tech.

kb4490628 farked up my win7 laptop.  Programs load super slow, if at all.  System Restore to sometime last month, seems to have sorted it.  Unless I reinstall kb4490628, I won't get the further updates.

I spend far more time dealing with Windows Update, than I have fixing malware problems.

People who complain about Windows 10, especially on the interface side, simply haven't given it a chance to sink in enough.

I was initially annoyed by it as well, but once I learned to customize it to my liking, it's been pretty good to me.

And honestly, if I need to do something where I need more privacy than SSL/SSH and an email address out of Switzerland can provide me, I should be using Tails.

Yeah, that took me a while.  Some of them are still accessible in their old Win=7 forms by right-clicking on Start, but Microsoft seems obsessed with re-doing their settings interface every version for no real reason.

No *official* support from Microsoft, but AMD does offer platform drivers for Windows 7 that you can slipstream into an install DVD or thumb drive.  There are also patches that disable the platform support warnings from Microsoft.

Supposedly the Zen/Zen+ CPUs and Zen APUs all work well enough with Windows 7, but the Zen+ APUs (ie, 2200G and 2400G) do not.

I'm not complaining. I just never got around to it because there was no real impetus for me to at the time. I use the desktop for gaming. I used to run Plex from it too, but now I have a NAS for that. I don't really internet on it, so while Win7 was still getting patches, I was just never motivated enough to hassle with the upgrade.

EOL has been at the edge of my radar for a while now. Mostly because I've been moving old work machines from 7-10 for several months now. I'll probably do it at home sometime in the next few weeks.

There are a few third party tools that do a reasonable job of restoring some classic UI aspects to Windows 10.  Too bad that I'm blocked from installing them on my corporate laptop as my IT department refuses to whitelist them.

Have to watch using unofficial drivers.  I was using a computer with a 7th gen CPU on Win 7 and the network card would randomly stop working, I would have issues with the video.  It's best to not play those games and just use official drivers.  It was such a clusterfark that we upgraded all machines early to Win10.

Unless that PC has previously installed the Win10 update during the initial 'free update' window, you won't be able to activate it with MS without paying for an upgrade license at that time. If you don't activate within a couple of weeks, it will go into a reduced functionality mode where you can't customize any of the settings (background pictures, etc.) and keeps nagging you to activate.

It depends on what your uses are.  There is enough overhead and functionality reduction that I wouldn't use it for anything that seriously hits the video hardware, but for most other uses, it does the job well.  I do all of my Visual Studio development inside of a VM so that my main OS drive isn't littered with development crap.  I have another VM for running Win16 and early Win32 DX games.  Other than switching between desktops, I hardly notice that they're running inside a VM.
